About the Author

Kathryn Sorrells is Professor of Communication Studies at California State University, Northridge (CSUN), and is currently serving as Department Chair. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in intercultural communication, critical pedagogy, performance, cultural studies, and feminist theory. She combines critical/cultural studies and postcolonial perspectives to explore issues of culture, race, gender, class, and sexuality. Kathryn grew up in Georgia; has lived in different regions of the United States; has studied and worked in Brazil, Japan, Turkey and China; and has traveled extensively in Asia, Europe, and parts of Latin America. The critical, social justice approach she uses to study and practice intercultural communication is informed by her experiences growing up in the South during the tumultuous and transformative civil rights movement and her subsequent participation in the antiwar; women’s; lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT); and labor and immigrant rights movements. Kathryn has published a variety of articles related to intercultural communication, globalization, and social justice and is co-editor along with Sachi Sekimoto of Globalizing Intercultural Communication: A Reader (Sage, 2015). She has been instrumental in organizing a campus-wide initiative on Civil Discourse and Social Change at CSUN aimed at developing students’ capacities for civic engagement and social justice. Kathryn is a recipient of numerous national, state, and local community service awards for founding and directing Communicating Common Ground, an innovative service learning project that provided students opportunities to develop creative alternatives to intercultural conflict. Additionally, Kathryn has experience as a consultant and trainer for nonprofit, profit and educational organizations in the areas of intercultural communication and multicultural learning.

Intercultural Communication: Globalization and Social Justice

I really enjoy teaching from this book. Sorrells uses the lens of globalization and social justice to inform various topics addressed in the book--ranging from questions of identity & difference, cultural space, migration, popular culture, intercultural relationships, and conflict. Her approach made ICC relevant and meaningful for my students. It helped them make sense of things they observe in everyday life--from gentrification to workplace conflict, social networking to Occupy Movement, Hip Hop to interracial marriage. The text sets up for engaging discussion and critical reflection in the classroom. I highly recommend this book.

Comprehensive, Easy-to-Read

This was our textbook for the Antioch University Seattle course entitled "Intercultural Communication". Our teacher based the class largely around the book. The course was fabulous! I highly recommend this book.

Terrific New Text

The book provides fresh voice and much-needed current perspective on intercultural communication competence. Sorrells is an excellent teacher, providing rich yet succinct examples--unraveling the various interwoven threads of her stories to enable the reader to more clearly see each thread--while keeping the overall tapestry in mind. Her writing should energize and guide cadres of undergraduates, as well as professionals, to use intercultural communication theory and practice to bring more equity and justice to our world.

From the beginning the author makes clear the need to put intercultural communication in context and with a clear purpose. She has challenged herself to address each topic, even the most familiar, through at least four lenses:
* in what ways is the topic complex and contradictory,
* how does the topic appear from micro, mess and macro views,
* what are the local and global connections, and
* how do the complexities and contradictions play out in our world today, particularly in terms of equity and justice?

The text is not intended for a basic-level reader of English! Also overly US-centered.

About the Author
Mary Hayden is Director of Studies at the International and Comparative Education Research Group in the Centre for the Study of Education in an International Context (CEIC) at the University of Bath.

Jack Levy was born in 1938. With a Jewish father and C of E mother he was uniquely fortuitous in being allowed the freedom to make his own choice of religious belief. Without the usual 'indoctrinated-faith' bondage, he was able to query the evident inconsistencies and to make informed conclusions. This set a pattern which moulded his entire outlook on life. He started his career as a draughtsman and progressed to Senior Design Engineer.

Jeff Thompson is Director of the CEIC and Director for International Education with the International Baccalaureate Organization.

About the Author

Sarah V. Mackenzie is associate professor of educational leadership at the University of Maine. She has dealt with ethical issues in education for many years, first in her own hands-on experiences as a teacher and teacher leader and now in her role as a professor of educational leadership. Her most recent book, Uncovering Teacher Leadership: Essays and Voices From the Field (Corwin, 2007), is a compilation of writing focused on the inner lives of teacher leaders. She and Richard Ackerman published an article in the May 2006 issue of Educational Leadership titled “Uncovering Teacher Leadership.”

In all of her work―as a teacher and a teacher of teachers and leaders―she has recognized the critical relationship between what teachers believe about their work and how successfully they perform that work.

About the Author
I retired in 2009 from an academic career at the University of Bath in which my primary contribution was to the theory and practice of participatory action research. I was Director of the Centre for Action Research in Professional Practice (CARPP) and co-founder of the MSc in Responsibility and Business Practice. In these programmes we pioneered graduate education based on collaborative, experiential and action-oriented forms of inquiry.

Hilary Bradbury Huang, Ph.D., is Professor in the Management Division of Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). Her research, scholarly activism and teaching focus on the human and organizational dimensions of creating healthy communities. At OHSU she teaches in the healthcare MBA and physician leadership development programs.  She also develops the action research approach to Community Based Participatory Research for Health. 

Hilary is editor-in-chief of Action Research Journal.  She co-edited the bestselling Handbook of Action Research (Sage, 2001; 2008) with Peter Reason.  Her journal articles have appeared in Organization Science, Sloan Management Review & Journal of Management Inquiry, among others. Previously Hilary was Research Associate Professor at University of Southern California and Director of Sustainable Business Research at the Center for Sustainable Cities. Before that she was Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior at Case Western Reserve University.  She lives with her family in Portland, OR.
Hilary Bradbury, Ph.D., is Director of Sustainable Business Programs at University of Southern California Center for Sustainable Cities, www.sustainablecities.edu. She brings her expertise in action research to work with businesses on issues of sustainability. Prior to this she was Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior at Case Western Reserve University| Weatherhead School of Management in Cleveland, Ohio. She has published widely in journals including Organization Science and Academy of Management Executive. She is editor of Action Research and co-editor with Peter Reason of the bestselling Handbook of Action Research (Sage, 2001, 2006, 2008). Hilary is multi lingual, having grown up in Ireland and having worked in Germany, Switzerland and Japan. She lives in LA with her family. The project that takes most of her time now is SEER (Sustainable Enterprise Executive Roundtable). Very enlightening read of the history of incarceration in the U.S. It was assigned for sociology of corrections, but despite that it is an excellent book. It forces you to look at the development of punishment in this country in a new way, and it thereby helps the reader understand something about why the prison system exists in its current state.

H. Lynn Erickson, Ed.D., is an independent consultant assisting schools and districts with concept-based curriculum design and instruction. She was a consultant to the International Baccalaureate Organization for the development of the Middle Years Programme―the Next Chapter.

Lynn Erickson's book does not disappoint. In this third edition book, Erickson sets the stage for `why' educators should be interested in conceptual teaching. Importantly, Erickson, an educator herself, writes with authentic respect for teachers who seek to create thoughtful classrooms in schools across the country today (against the backdrop of the recent emphasis on test prep). This book is a good choice for both school administrators/policy makers and teachers. Erickson successfully weaves 1-strategies for assisting teachers to structure their instruction and 2-the reasons behind what she is advocating in terms of education for the 21st Century. For educators who seek greater understanding about creating meaningful instruction, this book containing Erickson's most recent insights is a good choice!

About the Author
Paul D. Houston has established himself as one of the leading spokespersons for American education through his extensive speaking engagements, published articles, and his regular appearances on national radio and television. Formerly executive director of the American Association of School Administrators from 1994 to 2008, Houston has served as a teacher and building administrator in North Carolina and New Jersey. He has also served as assistant superintendent in Birmingham, Alabama, and as superintendent of schools in Princeton, NJ; Tucson, AZ; and Riverside, CA. Houston has served in an adjunct capacity for the University of North Carolina, Harvard University, Brigham Young University, and Princeton University. He has served as a consultant and speaker throughout the United States and overseas, and he has published more than 100 articles in professional journals.

Award-winning author and educational leader, Alan Blankstein served for 25 years as President of the HOPE Foundation, which he founded and whose honorary chair is Nobel Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu. A former “high-risk” youth, Alan began his career in education as a music teacher. He worked for Phi Delta Kappa, March of Dimes, and Solution Tree, which he founded in 1987 and directed for 12 years while launching Professional Learning Communities beginning in the late 1980s. He is the author of the best-selling book Failure Is Not an Option®: Six Principles That Guide Student Achievement in High-Performing Schools, which received the Book of the Year award from Learning Forward. Alan is Senior Editor, lead contributor, and/or author of 18 books, including Excellence Through Equity with Pedro Noguera, (In Press).  He also authored some 20 articles in leading education print including Education Week, Educational Leadership, The Principal, and Executive Educator. Alan has provided keynote presentations and workshops for virtually every major U.S. Ed Org, and throughout the UK, Africa, and the Middle East.  Alan has served on the Harvard International Principals Centers advisory board, and the Jewish Child Care Agency, where he once was a youth in residence.

 

 



Robert W. Cole is proprietor and founder of Edu-Data, a firm specializing in writing, research, and publication services. He was a member of the staff of Phi Delta Kappan magazine for 14 years: assistant editor 1974-1976, managing editor 1976-1980, and editor-in-chief 1981-88. During his tenure as editor-in-chief, the Kappan earned more than 40 Distinguished Achievement Awards from the Association of Educational Publishers, three of them for his editorials.

Since leaving the Kappan, Cole has served as founding vice president of the Schlechty Center for Leadership in School Reform (1990-1994). At CLSR he managed districtwide and communitywide school reform efforts and led the team that created the Kentucky Superintendents’ Leadership Institute. He formed the Bluegrass Leadership Network, in which superintendents worked together to use current leadership concepts to solve reform-oriented management and leadership problems.

As senior consultant to the National Reading Styles Institute (1994-2005), Cole served as editor and lead writer of the Power Reading Program. He and a team of writers and illustrators created a series of hundreds of graded short stories, short novels, and comic books from Primer through Grade 10. Those stories were then recorded by Cole and Marie Carbo; they are being used by schools all across the United States to teach struggling readers.

Cole has served as a book development editor for the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), for Corwin Press, and for Writer’s Edge Press. He has been president of the Educational Press Association of America and member of the EdPress Board of Directors. He has presented workshops, master classes, and lectures at universities nationwide, including Harvard University, Stanford University, Indiana University, Xavier University, Boise State University, and the University of Southern Maine. He has served as a special consultant to college and university deans in working with faculties on writing for professional publication. Recently he began serving as managing editor and senior associate with the Center for Empowered Leadership.

Not So Out-of-the-box

Reading this book makes you realize that title is not enough to make a book "out-of the box." Only few of the articles compiled in the book offer some practical perspectives that would change your view of leadership slightly.
