About the Author

Jim Ysseldyke, Ph.D., is Birkmaier Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology, director of the School Psychology Program, and director of the Center for Reading Research at the University of Minnesota. Widely requested as a staff developer and conference speaker, Ysseldyke brings more than 30 years of research and teaching experience to educational professionals around the globe.

As the former director of the federally funded National Center on Educational Outcomes, Ysseldyke conducted research and provided technical support that helped to boost the academic performance of students with disabilities and improve school assessment techniques nationally. Today, he continues to work to improve the education of students with disabilities.

The author of more than 300 publications on special education and school psychology, Ysseldyke is best known for his textbooks on assessment, effective instruction, issues in special education, and other cutting-edge areas of education and school psychology. With A Practical Approach to Special Education for Every Teacher, Ysseldyke seeks to equip educators with practical knowledge and methods that will help them to better engage students in exploring―and meeting―all their potentials.



Bob Algozzine is a professor in the Department of Educational Leadership at the University of North Carolina and project codirector of the U.S. Department of Education-supported Behavior and Reading Improvement Center. With 25 years of research experience and extensive firsthand knowledge of teaching students classified as seriously emotionally disturbed, Algozzine is a uniquely qualified staff developer, conference speaker, and teacher of behavior management and effective teaching courses. He is active in special education practice as a partner and collaborator with professionals in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools in North Carolina and as an editor of several journals focused on special education. Algozzine has written more than 250 manuscripts on special education topics, including many books and textbooks on how to manage emotional and social behavior problems.

Very Broad Overview of the Topic

I had to buy this book for a graduate Educational Assessment course and was very disappointed. There was nothing in this book that my professor didn't cover in handouts during class. Total waste of time to read. It's a good book for a parent who wants to educate himself/herself about what SHOULD be going on during the assessment of his/her child.

This is a highly ambitious, well thought out, carefully constructed, and thought-provoking volume that 'maps' social work research past and present. It differs markedly from most edited texts in its combination of diversity, coherence, and comprehensiveness... an original, stimulating and readable book in which not a single chapter is a rehash of the writer's previously published papers, as happens all too often in edited volumes. The modest term 'handbook' in its title hardly does justice to the book's depth, scope, and quality. While it can certainly serve as a ready reference guide, its thoughtfulness and questioning make it much more than a compendium of information, however rich. It is highly recommended for social work professionals throughout the Western world.

About the Author

Ian Shaw took an undergraduate degree in sociology at the time when the discipline was expanding rapidly in Western countries. He worked as a Probation Officer for a few years before moving to Cardiff University and much later to the University of York. He has – happily for him – never lost the nagging challenges that a social science agenda brings. He has had published perhaps seventy papers in peer reviewed journals, written or edited about twenty books, and completed about fifty chapters for collections. He led the development of the European Conference for Social Work Research and was the first chair of the European Social Work Research Association until 2015. He initiated the international journal Qualitative Social Work.

The rather mis-titled Evaluating in Practice (Ashgate) is, he suspects, the most original argument he has accomplished. 2014 saw the publication of his first extended research methods text, Doing Qualitative Research in Social Work (Sage. With Sally Holland). His Social Work Science (2016. Columbia University Press) is perhaps the most demanding manuscript he has tackled thus far. A four-volume ‘Major Work’ on Social Work Research (Sage 2015. With Jeanne Marsh and Mark Hardy) consists of 67 papers that they think are in the first rank of importance from any period in social work. Much of his recent work builds on a sabbatical to undertake a historical study of the relationship of social work and sociology, which took him to the University of Chicago in 2011.

Katharine Briar-Lawson is an experienced academic administrator and national expert on family focused practice and child and family policy. Among her books (co-authored) are Family-Centered Policies & Practices: International Implications (2001) and (co-edited) Innovative Practices with Vulnerable Children and Families (2001). She has recently co-edited two volumes on Evaluation Research in Child Welfare, (2002) and Charting the Impacts of University-Child Welfare Collaboration, (2003). She is a member of the Council on Social Work Education Practice Commission; she also serves as associate editor for the New Global Development: Journal of International and Comparative Social Welfare, and is consulting editor for Social Work, as well as Family Preservation. She Co-Chairs the Gerontological Task Force for the National Association for Deans and Directors.

Joan Orme began her social work career as a probationofficer working first in Sheffield and then Southampton. Her first academic post at the University of Southampton was specifically for training probation officers. She continued in generic social work education, with a specific interest in probation education and training, at Southampton until she took up her post at Glasgow . Joan was appointed the first Professor of Social Work at the University of Glasgow in October 2000 and helped to establish the Glasgow School of Social Work, a joint Schoolof Glasgow and Strathclyde Universities. She was appointed the founding Head of the School in 2003. Joan is active in a number of Scottish and UK organisations. In 2001-2004 she was Chair of the Joint University Council Social Work Education Committee (JUC SWEC) that represents universities with social work courses. In that role she represented social work academics on the Department of Health Project Board for the Social Work degree in England . She was appointed a lifelong fellow of the JUC in 2005. In 2000-2004 she was a member of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Training Board and was Vice Chair from 2003-2005. She currently holds a Researcher Development Initiative (RDI) grant from the ESRC for Increasing the confidence and competence of Social Work researchers: building research capacity in social work. She is a member of the steering group that developed the JUC SWEC Research Strategy http://www.swap.ac.uk/research/strategy.asp and a member of the Steering Group for the Research and Development Strategy for Social Services in Scotland

Professor Ruckdeschel is Co-Editor and Co-Founding Editor, along with Ian Shaw of the UK, of the Sage journal Qualitative Social Work: Research and Practice. He is a current member and past chair of the University-wide Qualitative Research Committee. He has also recently chaired the School of Social Work Rank & Tenure Committee (1998-2002) and the Family Concentration (1999-2002) and has served on and/or chaired numerous School committees. Professor Ruckdeschel currently serves on the Advisory Committee of Ethics Across the Curriculum (1998-present) and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Center for Health Care Ethics (1997-present).

About the Author
Ann Cunliffe is Professor of Organization Studies at the University of Leeds. She previously held positions at the University of New Mexico, California State University, the University of New Hampshire, USA and the University of Hull, UK. She is also a Visiting Professor at Fundação Getulio Vargas, Brazil and the University of Strathclyde, Scotland. Ann’s current research interests lie at the intersection of organizational studies, philosophy and communications, to examine how organizational life, identities and action are shaped in living conversations. In particular, she is interested in exploring how we can engage in collaborative, responsive and ethical ways of managing organizations.  Other interests include: leadership; self-work; sensemaking; collaboration; developing reflexive approaches to management research, practice and learning; and expanding the reach and ‘rigor’ of non-positivist qualitative research. Her recent publications include the co-authored book Key Concepts in Organization Theory with John Luhman (2012), and articles in Organizational Research Methods, Human Relations, Management Learning, the Journal of Management Studies, and Organization Studies. In 2002 she was awarded the Breaking the Frame Award from the Journal of Management Inquiry for ‘the article that best exemplifies a challenge to existing thought’. Ann is currently co Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Management Learning and Consulting Editor of Qualitative Research in Organizations and Management. She is a member of 8 international editorial boards, was Division Chair of the Critical Management Studies Division of the Academy of Management (2010) and organizes the biennial Qualitative Research in Management and Organization Conference. She received her PhD. and M.Phil. from Lancaster University, UK.

About the Author
Susan Brooks-Young has been involved in the field of instructional technology since 1979. She was one of the original technology users in the district where she taught and has continued to explore ways in which technology can be used to facilitate student learning. She has worked as computer mentor, technology trainer, and technology curriculum specialist.  Prior to establishing her own consulting firm, Susan was a teacher, site administrator, and technology specialist in a county office of education in a career that spanned more than 23 years. Since 1986, she has published articles and software reviews in a variety of education journals. She is also author of a number of books which focus on effective use of technology in schools. Susan works with educators internationally, focusing on practical technology-based strategies for personal productivity and effective technology implementation in classrooms. Two current areas of particular interest for Susan are mobile technology and BYOT programs.

Years out of date!

This edition is sorely in need of a revision and update! As a technology teacher myself I use a critical eye to judge works on the subject but I gave this text its fair chance considering it was a required text for a class.

I was done after chapter one.

Web links were in the text but not formatted as clickable hyperlinks. Multiple syntax errors. Tried 5 links referenced as resources at random by copy/pasting - four never resolved and the fifth was last updated in 2009. Saw no need to proceed further! This is unacceptable for a text on how to solve technology problems at a district level, and if administrators are trained with it this is a perfect example of the disconnect that commonly exists between planners at the district level and front-line educational providers.

I'm certain the concepts inside could prove valuable but the book's material is too far out of date for a technological field. This one needs to be upped to a new edition.

the arts of persuasion

This book is very informative. It allows a different perspective or suggestions on get others talking and working with you rather than against you. When dealing with the involuntary, this can be tricky. However, it is explained in a manner one would think we should be doing all the time. It isn't that hard. It is a rather easy read as well,just overlook some of the studies' facts and figures (unless you need to know them as well for school. It is a functional approach.

About the Author
Bob Algozzine is a professor in the Department of Educational Leadership at the University of North Carolina and project codirector of the U.S. Department of Education-supported Behavior and Reading Improvement Center. With 25 years of research experience and extensive firsthand knowledge of teaching students classified as seriously emotionally disturbed, Algozzine is a uniquely qualified staff developer, conference speaker, and teacher of behavior management and effective teaching courses. He is active in special education practice as a partner and collaborator with professionals in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools in North Carolina and as an editor of several journals focused on special education. Algozzine has written more than 250 manuscripts on special education topics, including many books and textbooks on how to manage emotional and social behavior problems.

Jim Ysseldyke, Ph.D., is Birkmaier Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology, director of the School Psychology Program, and director of the Center for Reading Research at the University of Minnesota. Widely requested as a staff developer and conference speaker, Ysseldyke brings more than 30 years of research and teaching experience to educational professionals around the globe.

As the former director of the federally funded National Center on Educational Outcomes, Ysseldyke conducted research and provided technical support that helped to boost the academic performance of students with disabilities and improve school assessment techniques nationally. Today, he continues to work to improve the education of students with disabilities.

The author of more than 300 publications on special education and school psychology, Ysseldyke is best known for his textbooks on assessment, effective instruction, issues in special education, and other cutting-edge areas of education and school psychology. About the Author
L. Dodge Fernald is Senior Lecturer on Psychology in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University. He received his Ph.D. in Counseling/ Clinical Psychology from Cornell University and has served as a Fulbright Lecturer at the University of Madrid and as a Visiting Professor at Cornell University. He was the Assistant Dean of the Masters of Liberal Arts Program at the Harvard Extension School until summer 2001. His basic textbook, Introduction to Psychology, that went through several editions with Houghton Mifflin and Prentice Hall and he has written other books for Erlbaum (The Hans Legacy: A Story of Science) and Macmillan (Walking Tour of Walden Two, with a Foreword by B. F. Skinner). He has received the Petra T. Shattuck Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Harvard Extension School, and he is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association Division Two - Society for the Teaching of Psychology. His areas of interest include psychological measurement, clinical practice, and the educational implications of psychology.

great book

Bought this book for my undergrad capstone class and it was very informative of the different perspectives in psychology. Each chapter goes in depth on the particular perspective and comes with a summary and important key words at the end of the chapter. Also, there are a couple questions that you should be able to answer at the end of the chapter. Overall, really great textbook and sums up the perspectives perfectly.

About the Author
In addition to a research career spanning more than 20 years, Professor Smith is experienced in research management, research strategy, and research assessment of all kinds. She has contributed to the work of the ESRC (Research Grants Board, Professorial Fellowships Commissioning Panel, Public Services Programme Commissioning Panel), HEFCE (as a panel member in the 2001 and 2008 Research Assessment Exercises), the Leverhulme Trust (Philip Leverhulme Prize panel), and to research development and monitoring in HEIs within and beyond the UK. She also has a wide-ranging teaching and examining portfolio, at all levels, in a variety of topics.

Born in Northumberland and brought up in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, I have lived in the North East for most of my life. I completed my first degree in geography at Lancaster University and PhD at the University of Edinburgh, then worked as a lecturer in geography at Northumbria University before moving to Durham in 2000. Here, I teach at undergraduate level, supervise PhD students, and am Co-Director of the Centre for Social Justice and Community Action. I'm a social geographer whose research is informed by feminist and participatory theory and practice. I work on a range of issues around fear, violence and community safety; emotions and geopolitics; and participatory practice, politics, theory and activism. My research, teaching and public engagement activities are underpinned by a commitment to social justice. Recently I've worked on a number of participatory action research projects in the North East, with partners including refugee-led organisations, youth groups, Rivers Trusts and survivors of violence. As well as locating my own research and some training and teaching locally outside the University, I am involved in a number of initiatives to encourage two-way research collaborations, including the Centre for Social Justice and Community Action which develops and supports theory and practice around participatory action research at local, national and international levels. I'm also interested in the challenges that the idea of work life balance presents for academic business and cultures, and in supporting fairer institutional policies and practices for fractional, flexible and non-traditional workers.
