About the Author
Roger Pierangelo is an associate professor in the Department of Special Education and Literacy at Long Island University. He has been an administrator of special education programs and served for eighteen years as a permanent member of Committees on Special Education. He has over thirty years of experience in the public school system as a general education classroom teacher and school psychologist, and is a consultant to numerous private and public schools, PTAs, and SEPTA groups. Pierangelo has also been an evaluator for the New York State Office of Vocational and Rehabilitative Services and a director of a private clinic. He is a New York State licensed clinical psychologist, certified school psychologist, and a Board Certified Diplomate Fellow in Child and Adolescent Psychology and Forensic Psychology. Pierangelo is currently president of The National Association of Special Education Teachers, executive director of The American Academy of Special Education Professionals, and vice-president of The National Association of Parents with Children in Special Education.

Pierangelo earned his BS degree from St. John's University, his MS from Queens College, Professional Diploma from Queens College, PhD from Yeshiva University, and Diplomate Fellow in Child and Adolescent Psychology and Forensic Psychology from the International College of Professional Psychology. He is a member of the American Psychological Association, New York State Psychological Association, Nassau County Psychological Association, New York State Union of Teachers, and Phi Delta Kappa.

Pierangelo is the coauthor of numerous books, including The Big Book of Special Education Resources and The Step-by-Step Book Series for Special Educators.

George Giuliani is an assistant professor at Hofstra University's School of Education and Allied Health and Human Services, in the Department of Counseling, Research, Special Education, and Rehabilitation. He is the executive director of the National Association of Special Education Professionals, president of the National Association of Parents with Children in Special Education (NAPCSE), vice-president of the National Association of Special Education Teachers, and an educational consultant for various school districts. He has provided numerous workshops for parents and teachers on a variety of special education and psychological topics.

Giuliani earned Board Certification as a Diplomate Fellow in Child and Adolescent Psychology and Forensic Psychology from the International College of Professional Psychology. Giuliani is also a New York State licensed psychologist, certified school psychologist, and has an extensive private practice focusing on children with special needs. He is a member of the American Psychological Association, New York State Psychological Association, the National Association of School Psychologists, Suffolk County Psychological Association, Psi Chi, American Association of University Professors, and the Council for Exceptional Children. Giuliani earned his BA from the College of the Holy Cross, MS from St. John's University, JD from City University Law School, and PsyD from Rutgers University, The Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology.

Giuliani is the coauthor of numerous books, including The Big Book of Special Education Resources and The Step-by-Step Book Series for Special Educators.

About the Author
Bob Algozzine is a professor in the Department of Educational Leadership at the University of North Carolina and project codirector of the U.S. Department of Education-supported Behavior and Reading Improvement Center. With 25 years of research experience and extensive firsthand knowledge of teaching students classified as seriously emotionally disturbed, Algozzine is a uniquely qualified staff developer, conference speaker, and teacher of behavior management and effective teaching courses. He is active in special education practice as a partner and collaborator with professionals in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools in North Carolina and as an editor of several journals focused on special education. Algozzine has written more than 250 manuscripts on special education topics, including many books and textbooks on how to manage emotional and social behavior problems.

Jim Ysseldyke, Ph.D., is Birkmaier Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology, director of the School Psychology Program, and director of the Center for Reading Research at the University of Minnesota. Widely requested as a staff developer and conference speaker, Ysseldyke brings more than 30 years of research and teaching experience to educational professionals around the globe.

As the former director of the federally funded National Center on Educational Outcomes, Ysseldyke conducted research and provided technical support that helped to boost the academic performance of students with disabilities and improve school assessment techniques nationally. Today, he continues to work to improve the education of students with disabilities.

The author of more than 300 publications on special education and school psychology, Ysseldyke is best known for his textbooks on assessment, effective instruction, issues in special education, and other cutting-edge areas of education and school psychology. Nothing new...

I was hoping that this book would enlighten me about working with students who have severe emotionalities. However, this is more of an introductory overview. Most of the advice seemed common sense, although I have heard that common sense is not too common! LOL! Anyway, save your $20 and just borrow it from your library. It's not worth the money. It's a quick read, and when I finished, I was left disappointed.

About the Author
Dr Alec Grant is Reader in Narrative Mental Health in the School of Health Sciences at the University of Brighton. He qualified as a mental health nurse in the mid-1970s and went on to study psychology, social science and psychotherapy. He is widely published in the fields of ethnography, autoethnography, narrative inquiry, clinical supervision, cognitive behavioural psychotherapy, and communication and interpersonal skills. His current and developing scholarly interests coalesce broadly in the area of narrative research, and postmodern and poststructural developments in qualitative inquiry, in mental health and other healthcare areas.

Michael Townend is a Reader in Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy at the University of Derby. 

Adrian Cockx is a High Intensity CBT Therapist with the Brent IAPT Service in North West London.

I'm reading this book for a university subject. I'm a clinician with 20 years experience. It covers the basics of assessment and case formulation very well and would be very useful to novice therapists wanting to learn more about this. Where it falls down, unforgiveably, is in the case studies where they look go beyond the assessment process to look at treatment options. In the PTSD case study, and a depression case study, both of which involved trauma, they fail to mention EMDR as a treatment. EMDR is a research-backed standout treatment for trauma - it offers an effective way of changing the negative affect associated with trauma, something which the authors are refreshingly aware of and address in various ways. The omission of EMDR is a gob-smaking omission in a book which is so up to date in all other respects. Thats why I say its patchy - the book is so good in all other respects its kind of amazing that they don't mention EMDR.

About the Author
R. Michael Furr is Professor of Psychology and McCulloch Faculty Fellow at Wake Forest University, where he received the 2012 Award for Excellence in Research. His methodological work focuses on the measurement of similarity between psychological profiles, on the measurement of behavior, and on contrast analysis. His substantive research focuses on personality judgment and on the links between personality, situational forces, and behavior. He is a former associate editor of the Journal of Research in Personality , a former executive editor of the Journal of Social Psychology, and a consulting editor for several other scholarly journals. He has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in psychometrics, psychological testing, personality psychology, statistics, and research methods at Appalachian State University and Wake Forest University.

Verne R. Bacharach is professor of psychology at Appalachian State University. He has held faculty appointments at the University of Alabama, Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, and Acadia University in Nova Scotia and has chaired the departments at Appalachian State and Acadia. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in statistics, tests and measurements, and research methods for nearly 40 years. He has a long journal publication history of research and review articles. Dr. Bacharach obtained a Ph.D. in experimental psychology from the University of Kansas in 1971.

Advanced Psychometrics

I was totally lost with the subject of reliability. This is a hard subject so the concepts take a while to master. The authors did an excellent job at elucidating complicated constructs. They used concrete, simple examples to explain complicated formulas and go to the right level of depth to understand what the different concepts stand for.

If you're taking an elementary psychometrics course, this is a really great text. The book is full of examples that make the understanding of such difficult concepts, such as validity and reliability, easier to understand. I only gave it four stars because the text would have been stronger if a section with key assumptions or points comparing the main issues would have been included.

About the Author

Dr. Gavin Reid is an international consultant and psychologist with consultancies in Canada, UK, Europe, Middle East, Asia and Australasia. He was visiting professor at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada in the Department of Education and Counseling Psychology and Special Education in 2007 and 2010.

He is an ambassador for the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre in the UK and is also a consultant for the Child Enrichment Medical Centre in Dubai, the Centre for Child Evaluation and Teaching (CCET) in Kuwait and for the Institute of Child Education and Psychology Europe (ICEPE).

He is also currently a consultant to the Open University in the UK and co-founder and director of the Red Rose School for children with specific learning difficulties in St. Annes on Sea, Lancashire, UK. He is a visiting educational psychologist to organizations and schools in Switzerland, the UK, Middle East, Asia and Egypt.

He was formerly senior lecturer in the Department of Educational Studies (formally dept. of Special Education), Moray House School of Education, University of Edinburgh from 1991-2007. He has written twenty eight books on learning, motivation and dyslexia and lectured to thousands of professionals and parents in 75 countries. He has also had books published in Polish, Italian, Arabic, Hebrew, French, Chinese and Slovak.  He is an experienced teacher with over 10 years experience in the classroom and has held external examiner appointments at 18 universities worldwide for Ph.D and masters courses.

About the Author
Jeff Ferrell is Visiting Professor of Criminology at the University of Kent, UK, and Professor of Sociology at Texas Christian University, USA. He is author of the books Crimes of Style, Tearing Down the Streets, and Empire of Scrounge. He is co-editor of the books Cultural Criminology, Ethnography at the Edge, Making Trouble, Cultural Criminology Unleashed, and Cultural Criminology: Theories of Crime. Jeff Ferrell is founding and current editor of the New York University Press book series Alternative Criminology, and one of the founding editors of the journal Crime, Media, Culture: An International Journal (winner of the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers’ 2006 Charlesworth Award for Best New Journal). In 1998 he received the Critical Criminologist of the Year Award from the Critical Criminology Division of the American Society of Criminology.

Keith J. Hayward is Professor of Criminology at the University of Kent, UK and holds visiting positions at universities in Australia, Brazil, and the United States. He has published widely in the areas of criminological theory, spatial and social theory, visual and popular culture, and terrorism and fanaticism. As one of the leading figures in the field of cultural criminology, Dr Hayward is particularly interested in the various ways in which cultural dynamics intertwine with the practices of crime and crime control within contemporary society; as a consequence, he has written on everything from the role of documentary filmmaking in criminology to the existential allure of ‘Jihadi cool’. He is the author, co-author, or editor of ten books, the most recent being, Cultural Criminology (2016), a four-volume edited collection for Routledge’s Major Works series. Currently, Dr Hayward is completing a short (non-criminological) book on ‘infantilization’ and the life course.

Jock Young, one of the foremost criminologists of our time, is Professor of Sociology and Head of the Centre for Criminology at Middlesex University. His work and theories have had a significant influence on the shape of criminology, sociology and politics.

About the Author
Melanie Smith (PhD) is a Lecturer and Researcher in the Department of Tourism and Catering at the Budapest Metropolitan University of Applied Sciences in Budapest where she specialises in cultural tourism and health tourism. 

Nikki Macleod has more than 15 years’ experience of teaching tourism at University of Greenwich and the University of North London (now London Metropolitan University) and is a registered practitioner of the Higher Education Academy. During this period she has taught extensively, contributed to the development of new programmes and undertaken research. She is an External Examiner for Oxford Brookes University and the University of East London.

Margaret Hart Robinson is currently teaching Tourism Studies at the University of Las Palmas, Spain.

A very useful book!

Simply, excellent! This selection was made advisedly, covering the most important concepts and notions in tourism studies. It should be a necessary reading not only for (postgraduate and doctoral) students, but for researchers as well. Through 41 well written, articulated and expertly documented units, as diverse as `Authenticity', `Destination Management', `Gay tourism' and `Religious and Spiritual Tourism', the authors give us a brief, but comprehensive summary of and insight into the various themes. At the end of each chapter, the reader is given suggestions on further reading, relevant books and journal articles. Buy it! I am sure you'll have it at hand at all times!

About the Author

Jim Ysseldyke, Ph.D., is Birkmaier Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology, director of the School Psychology Program, and director of the Center for Reading Research at the University of Minnesota. Widely requested as a staff developer and conference speaker, Ysseldyke brings more than 30 years of research and teaching experience to educational professionals around the globe.

As the former director of the federally funded National Center on Educational Outcomes, Ysseldyke conducted research and provided technical support that helped to boost the academic performance of students with disabilities and improve school assessment techniques nationally. Today, he continues to work to improve the education of students with disabilities.

The author of more than 300 publications on special education and school psychology, Ysseldyke is best known for his textbooks on assessment, effective instruction, issues in special education, and other cutting-edge areas of education and school psychology. With A Practical Approach to Special Education for Every Teacher, Ysseldyke seeks to equip educators with practical knowledge and methods that will help them to better engage students in exploring―and meeting―all their potentials.



Bob Algozzine is a professor in the Department of Educational Leadership at the University of North Carolina and project codirector of the U.S. Department of Education-supported Behavior and Reading Improvement Center. With 25 years of research experience and extensive firsthand knowledge of teaching students classified as seriously emotionally disturbed, Algozzine is a uniquely qualified staff developer, conference speaker, and teacher of behavior management and effective teaching courses. He is active in special education practice as a partner and collaborator with professionals in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools in North Carolina and as an editor of several journals focused on special education. Algozzine has written more than 250 manuscripts on special education topics, including many books and textbooks on how to manage emotional and social behavior problems.
