About the Author
James M. White is a Professor in the School of Social Work and Family Studies at the University of British Columbia and resides with his wife and three daughters in Vancouver, Canada. His research interests include family development as well as marital interaction and communication. He is the author of Dynamics of Family Development (published in the U.S. in 1991 and translated into Japanese in 1994), as well as numerous articles that have appeared in the Journal of Family Issues, Journal of Social & Personal Relationships, Journal of Marriage and Family, and elsewhere. His authored and co-authored book chapters include a chapter with R. H. Rodgers on family development in the Sourcebook of Family Theories & Methods (1993). He has served as referee for numerous journals in family relations and public health and is an Associate Editor for the Canadian Journal of Public Health, Journal of Comparative Family Studies, and The International Encyclopedia of Family Relationships. He is a past-president of the Northwest Council on Family Relations, whose membership includes academics, practitioners, and therapists from the states and provinces of the Pacific Northwest. He is also an Honorary Fellow of the National Council on Family Relations.
David M. Klein is Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Notre Dame. His current research is on relationship formation, assessment, and dissolution. He co-edited the Sourcebook of Family Theory and Research, and has served as Chair and Archivist of the Theory Construction and Research Methodology Workshop. He also has been Treasurer of the National Council on Family Relations, and Chair of its Research and Theory Section. He is also an Honorary Fellow of the National Council on Family Relations.

Way Too Wordy For What It Is Trying To Say

I had to read this book for a graduate level course and this is one of the most painful experiences I've ever had.
My suggestion for the fourth addition would be to tone down the language. You can explain scientific theory in a far more straightforward fashion than how this is written. The authors talk in circles and never truly get to the point of what they are trying to say.
If you HAVE to read this for a class, prepare yourself. It takes a lot of time to get through it.

Makes a great door stop.

As a therapist, it is important to start building a library of reference. There are books you will buy in your academic career that will be valuable throughout your years of practice. This is not one of those books. The usefulness of this text begins and ends as a door stop, table level, firelighter or shotgun target. It is, hands down, the worst textbook I have ever had to read. The authors need to have their thesaurus confiscated, their rationale seems to be "why use a regular word that succinctly expresses the concept we are trying to convey, when there's a much longer, more impressive word that everyone will have to look up?"
While reading this text, I got the impression of two Mathematicians translating stereo assembly instructions from Chinese into English and then looking up every word in a thesaurus and replacing it with whatever had the most syllables. Don't get me wrong, I love to read and I have more than a few graduate level courses behind me.
While trying to work from this text, the only thing I could think about was all the horrible things I would like to do to the authors and editor.

Worst graduate text book i have ever read

As a second year grad student, i don't have much time on my hands, so the fact that i felt the need to write a review on this turgid book should speak volumes. It fails to explain the often "simple" concepts of family theories to any degree. The reader is left exhausted and often confused. My class agrees with me. Out of 15 of us i have yet to hear of anyone else whole actually likes this book. In fact when we confronted our professor on the book he told us that he cannot stand the book either. Which is why he only uses it for the first three weeks of class and then never touches it or tests us on it again.
