About the Author
Anne Huff is Visiting Professor of Strategy and Innovation at the TUM Business School in Munich, Germany, where she is helping organize research on open innovation that crosses traditional organizational boundaries, product-service fusion and leadership systems.  She was Founding Director of the Advanced Institute of Management Research (AIM), a UK wide management research initiative with offices based at the London Business School, and continues to be a visiting AIM fellow at LBS.  She is also a visiting professor in the Communications Department of the University of Colorado, and had prior appointments at the University of Illinois, and UCLA.  She earned a BA from Barnard College (philosophy), as well as an MA (sociology) and PhD (management) from Northwestern University.  

Her research interests focus on sustained innovation and strategic change; both are seen as dynamic processes of interaction among firms and as cognitive processes affected by the interaction of individuals over time.  Recent books include Mapping Strategic Knowledge. Sage, 2002 (edited, with Mark Jenkins), When Firms Change Direction. Oxford University Press, 2000 (with James O. Huff), and  Writing for Scholarly Publication (Sage, 1998).    In 1998-99 Anne was President of the Academy of Management, an association of management researchers with 16,000 members worldwide; she held associated leadership positions from 1995 to 2001.  In August 2003 she received the Distinguished Scholar Award of the Managerial and Organizational Cognition Division of that association.  She serves on the boards of several professional organizations and journals.

Great book for graduate students and faculty

I was designing a workshop on theory development. Found several useful articles and book chapters on this topic. But how do we transition from the points made in these articles/chapters, to actually specifying how one's research contributes? Anne Huff's book bridges this gap. Doing the exercises in her book will enable a researcher to define which conversation a research paper joins, detail how the paper extends the conversation, and provides background information for readers not familiar with the conversation to follow the paper. In sum, this book is particularly valuable for those who want to distill the nuts and bolts of defining research contribution.

This is one of the best books available for helping to write a research paper at a higher education level. It helps you understand how to put it together and what is needed. This is a must have for graduate school!

Eureka!

Reading this tantelizing book practically nonstop since it arrived, my confidence as a researcher is slowly being restored. Anne provides answers to all of those questions that mulled in the back of my mind. Questions like, 'Am I in the right conversation?', 'How can I make this claim credible yet interesting?', and 'how can I best position my contribution?'. In addition, she relates your research design to your career as a researcher.
She does not dump a "textbook/cookiecutter" formula and insult the reader, she provides substance. Brava!

A Guide to Field Research

"The Big Picture: A Guide to Field Research" gives the beginner researcher a manual to follow when conducting an ethnographic project. Carol Bailey uses real life examples throughout her book to illustrate ideas. The book is nicely written and easy to read with a subtitle for each new idea presented. Bailey explains step-by-step research strategies to guide the student ethnographer through the processes of "selecting a project" to "writing the final paper." This book covers fundamentals of field research and is a good guide for the student ethnographer. I would recommend reading this book prior to beginning any ethnographic field research project.

Had to read it For a Class, Better Than Most on the Subject

I thought that this book was helpful. Bailey gives ten ways to analyze data collected during field research. She also has an extended discussion of ethics on the field. She gives many exmaples of situations where it would appear that it would be all right to break confidentiality, and then she says "no." Yet she does acknowledge extraordinary exceptions to the rule.

Better than most books I have come across, this one helps a person to think through the possible circumstances that could come up during field research and ultimately, whether or not a person would want to do a certain project. Recommended.

About the Author
Barrie Houlihan is Professor of Sport Policy in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough University, and Visiting Professor at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences. His research interests include the domestic and international policy processes for sport.

He has authored or edited twenty books and over fifty journal articles. His most recent books include Managing Elite Sport Systems (edited with Svein Andersen and Lars Tore Ronglan, Routledge 2015), Sport Policy in Britain (with Iain Lindsey, Routledge 2012) and a third edition of Sport and Society (edited with Dominic Malcolm, SAGE 2015).

Barrie has undertaken consultancy projects for various UK government departments, UK Sport, UNESCO, the World Anti-Doping Agency and the European Union. He is the editor in chief of the International Journal of Sport Policy and Politics.

About the Author

Dale L. Brubaker is Professor of Education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He has also served on the faculties of the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. He received his doctorate in foundations of education from Michigan State University. He is the author or coauthor of numerous books on education and educational leadership, including CREATIVE CURRICULUM LEADERSHIP (Corwin), STAYING ON TRACK, (Corwin), and CREATIVE SURVIVAL IN EDUCATIONAL BUREAUCRACIES.



Larry D. Coble is Managing Associate with School Leadership Services, A Division of The Coble Professional Group, a leadership and management consulting organization, and Director of the Collegium for the Advancement of Schools at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He provides speeches and seminars on leadership nationwide. He was a Senior Program Associate at the Center for Creative Leadership and served as assistant principal, principal, and superintendent in school systems in North Carolina. His most recent superintendency was in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He received his doctorate in educational administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He is coauthor of STAYING ON TRACK (Corwin).

About the Author
Luiz Moutinhois Foundation Chair of Marketing at the Department of Management, University of Glasgow

About the Author
Concha Delgado Gaitan, PhD, is an award-winning ethnographic researcher and professor of sociocultural studies in education. She received the George and Louise Spindler award for her contributions to the field of Anthropology and Education from the Council of Anthropology and Education of the American Anthropological Association. Her early career as a teacher and school principal informs her later work as a practicing anthropologist in communities and professor at the University of California, Davis. Concha has also worked in the field of public health education in Latino communities, combining that interest with her dedication to issues of social justice and education. She is a national and international speaker as well as a consultant on the numerous topics that inspire her work.

Among her many scholarly publications are her books where she presents her work as an ethnographer working with disenfranchised families and communities toward their empowerment and extending practical lessons to educators: (1) The Power of Community, (2) Protean Literacy, (3) Crossing Cultural Borders, (4) Literacy for Empowerment, (5) School and Society, (6) Involving Latino Families in the School, (7) Building Culturally Responsive Classrooms, and this most current one (8) Creating a College Culture for Latino Students. In a different book, Prickly Cactus, she turns the lenses inward to look at the role of family and community in her life during a time of major health crisis. As a teacher, or anyone for that matter, who is with diverse people all day this is the book for you. Although it is a short book, if read with an open mind can absorb a lot of food for thought.

This book raises the issues, but the multicultural exercises for classroom use are weak and nothing more than I've already figured out myself in various graduate classes I have had to create lesson plans for. I'd say the exercises are lacking in imagination. Though, as I said above, the issues raised are certainly worth the read.

About the Author

Jim Ysseldyke, Ph.D., is Birkmaier Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology, director of the School Psychology Program, and director of the Center for Reading Research at the University of Minnesota. Widely requested as a staff developer and conference speaker, Ysseldyke brings more than 30 years of research and teaching experience to educational professionals around the globe.

As the former director of the federally funded National Center on Educational Outcomes, Ysseldyke conducted research and provided technical support that helped to boost the academic performance of students with disabilities and improve school assessment techniques nationally. Today, he continues to work to improve the education of students with disabilities.

The author of more than 300 publications on special education and school psychology, Ysseldyke is best known for his textbooks on assessment, effective instruction, issues in special education, and other cutting-edge areas of education and school psychology. With A Practical Approach to Special Education for Every Teacher, Ysseldyke seeks to equip educators with practical knowledge and methods that will help them to better engage students in exploring―and meeting―all their potentials.



Bob Algozzine is a professor in the Department of Educational Leadership at the University of North Carolina and project codirector of the U.S. Department of Education-supported Behavior and Reading Improvement Center. With 25 years of research experience and extensive firsthand knowledge of teaching students classified as seriously emotionally disturbed, Algozzine is a uniquely qualified staff developer, conference speaker, and teacher of behavior management and effective teaching courses. He is active in special education practice as a partner and collaborator with professionals in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools in North Carolina and as an editor of several journals focused on special education. Algozzine has written more than 250 manuscripts on special education topics, including many books and textbooks on how to manage emotional and social behavior problems.

This compendium of new essays on theory of history (rather than history's theory) is the very model of what a scientific handbook (an honorable scholarly genre which has been much degraded of late by commercialization) ought to be. The problems which motivated the interest in theory of history from the 1930s and 40s down to just yesterday have now been pretty much assimilated to a new lingua franca of metahistorical discourse. Most are historians reflecting on their own work and practices, or those of others. They tell us about methods (empirical, scientific, psychoanalytic, digital), schools (The Historical School, Annales), lots of individuals (Collingwood,Hayden White, Derrida, Foucault), applications (social history, gender history). I found these essays satisfying, informative, and, in cases where I was pretty familiar with the subject, quite reliable. This is the sort of book that can be consulted by the scholar again and again as needs and questions arise. To be sure, topics may arise that are not covered here (I thought of Social Darwinism, and environmental history), but the editors of such a collection must be selective and obviously cannot cover everything. I only recently received a copy of Images of Organization (updated edition) as a desk copy to review for the I/O Psych class that I teach. I just started reading your book I am absolutely blown away by it. I cannot believe that I had missed this marvelous work. My ignorance knows few, if any, limits!

You pull together such a span of ideas and integrate them beautifully with your own angle, stimulating one's thinking. This is the kind of mind opening perspective to which I like to expose my classes. Thank you for condensing it so powerfully. By the way, the bibliographic notes are as exciting a read as is the rest of the book. I look forward to devouring the rest of the book.

About the Author
Gareth Morgan is well known for his creative contributions to management. He is the author of seven books, including Images of Organization, Creative Organization Theory, Imaginization and Riding the Waves of Change. He acts as consultant and seminar leader to numerous organizations throughout Europe and North America, and is Distinguished Research Professor at York University in Toronto. He has sat on the editorial boards of the Academy of Management, and Organization Studies; and is a Life Fellow of the International Academy of Management. Born in Wales, he now lives in Toronto with his wife, Karen and their children Evan and Heather.

A better version than the most recent edition

I ordered this book in error. I should have ordered the most recent version. I did try to use the book and found it to be helpful. Unfortunately the course syllabus specifically was using references from the updated version which has different chapters and different page numbers. It was fortunate for me that I was able to return the book with a credit and get the updated version. Actually I preferred this version to the newer one, but did not know that until the exchange had been made.

Too esoteric...hard to follow.

I am a graduate student in organizational development. Although this book has some good underlying concepts, I found most of the book hard to follow and not very engaging. It was often difficult to see how many of the concepts actually apply to organizations. There may be good ideas, but they often get lost in the rambling chapters.
