Lundskow's approach is the opposite―students will learn the facts of religion in its great diversity, all the most interesting and compelling beliefs and practices, and then learn relevant concepts that can be used to explain empirical observations. The book thus follows the logic of actual research―investigate and then analyze―rather than approaching concepts with no real bearing on how religion is experienced in society.  This approach, using provocative examples and with an eye toward the historical and theoretical, not to mention global experience of religion, will make this book a success in the classroom.

 

The author envisions a substantive approach that examines religion as it actually exists in all its forms, including belief, ritual, daily living, identity, institutions, social movements, social control, and social change. Within these broad categories, the book will devote particular chapters to important historical moments and movements, leaders, and various individual religions that have shaped the contemporary form and effect of religion in the world today.

A review from someone who actually read the whole book

As someone who made it past page three, I can say that this book is pretty fantastic. It approaches religion from a sociological perspective. About half of any given chapter explains historical examples of the topic being discussed, whether it's emergent religions, cults, alternative religions, etc. The remaining half of the chapter usually explains the concepts academically. At its heart, the book explains what spirituality and religion can do for their practitioners, and at what levels they can do it. Fantastic book. Very accessible, very educational. Don't trust someone to review a book if they haven't made it past the first chapter.

Puerile Premise for the Whole Anti-Intellectual Affair

Thank the Deity that there are some real highlights in academic study of religion, like Charles Taylor, because otherwise it would be a very depressing wasteland of half-baked thinkers. And it would make one despair of the entire field. There is a strong need,seemingly, in these wobbly minds to shore-up an essentially anti-intellectual approaches, so that they so not have to get too specific historically. And one suspects that lurking underneath is the need to leave a conceptual space of non-criticism for some view of religious matters that does not need a salutary check by delimitable facts. That this book falls into this category is clear right from the start, in the most egregious way, on p. 3: "[Spirituality] exists as a feeling, rather than as an observable pattern of behavior or set of beliefs." Well, this is one of the most ridiculous things I have from an "academic" in a long time, and as someone specializing in religion, completely unconscionable. First, it is simply false in human religious history that various spritualities, be they group or individual, are not characterized by quite analyzable patterns of belief, pattern of cultural behavior, and even using past personal documents like letters and literary works, a very definable ethos, capable of being limned with precision. What this blowzy thinker Lundskow here wants is to stake out some realm where he can speculate with no real historical checks apparently. Only historical anecdote or opinion that fits what he wants to say anyways. How tedious. Yuck! Second, as a more contemporary matter, this contention is also very faulty, but its fault seems to have a cryptic, polemical purpose. For logically if "spirituality" has in this man's stated premise only "feelings", and nothing regularly observable then what he can only be basing this on is, again logically, some special sense he personally has, even if he flowers it up with anecdotal facts and historical referents, which predictably, he seems to have done. There is some zone in his theorizng which will be uncheckable by historical referent at all, for that is his very state premise, and even purpose! Most sadly, what is most wrong with this effort from the start, is only discernible with rather concentrated philosophical reasoning, and thus outside the bailiwick of the Amazonian jungle surely. Still, it is worth pointing out that the in fact a kind of direct, patternless, beliefless and behaviorless state (Zen, Meister Eckhart) is something that some great mystics have alluded to. But that is quite a rare thing by definition, and may be often lost in translation as commonsense would tell us. And even with these special tendencies, there are very strong traditional patterns. Ironically, the puerile premise adduced here actually precludes the possiblity of a real phenomenology of such rare experiences because it has, in blunderbuss fashion, construed general "spirituality" in such a unspecifiable (historially) way. I do not have the stomach to read books like this. If I saw in the sale bin at a book store, the first few pages would make me realize it is a perfect piece of pure vanity.

About the Author

Don C. Locke (Ed.D., Ball State) is Distinguished Professor Emeritus at NC State University, and Retired Director of Diversity and Multiculturalism at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. He was Director of the Asheville Graduate Center (2000-2005) and Director of the North Carolina State University doctoral program in Adult and Community College Education at the Asheville Graduate Center (1993-2005). Immediately prior to moving to the Asheville Graduate center in July 1993, he was Professor and Head of the Department of Counselor Education at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, where he was named Alumni Distinguished Graduate Professor in 2003. He began his career as a high school social studies teacher in Fort Wayne, Indiana where he also worked as a high school counselor for two years. He earned his doctorate at Ball State University in 1974. He has been active in state, regional, and national counseling organizations. Prior professional service includes President of the North Carolina Counseling Association, Chair of the Southern Region Branch of American Counseling Association, President of the Southern Association of Counselor Education and Supervision, member of the American Counseling Association Governing Council, Chair of the Counseling and Human Development Foundation (1994-96), Associate Editor of the Mental Health Counselors Journal (1993-96), President of Chi Sigma Iota International, and President of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. Dr. Locke is the recipient of the Ella Stephens Barrett Leadership Award from the North Carolina Counseling Association (1990), the Professional Development Award from the American Counseling Association (1996), and the Professional Recognition Award from the American Counseling Association Foundation (1998). He is the author or co-author of more than 125 publications, with a focus on multicultural issues. His 1992 book, Increasing Multicultural Understanding, was a SAGE Publications Best Seller, and the second edition was released in 1998. The second edition of Psychological Techniques for Teachers was published in 1995. His co-authored book, Culture and Diversity Issues in Counseling was published in 1996. His co-edited book, The Handbook of Counseling, was published in 2001. He is active in the Buncombe County North Carolina area and holds life memberships in Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, NAACP, American Counseling Association, and Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. He is married to Marjorie Myles Locke and they are the parents of two adult daughters.



Deryl F. Bailey (Ph.D., University of Virginia) is an Associate Professor at the University of Georgia. He earned B.S. and Master’s degrees from Campbell University, and his Education Specialist and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Virginia. He believes strongly in the power of education and is committed to advocating for equitable opportunities to promote positive and successful educational experiences for all young people. He is an accomplished professional and published scholar in the areas of school counseling, multicultural counseling, and adolescent development with a special emphasis on African American adolescent male development. He uses humor and sincerity in his teaching and professional development trainings for counselors, teachers, administrators, and parents, in the areas of exploring assumptions, welcoming diversity in the workplace, and leadership for diversity. His specialty in multicultural education includes Secondary School counseling, group work, mentoring African American adolescents, engaging parents, and the development and implementation of enrichment and empowerment interventions for adolescents. During his career, he has consulted with school districts, churches, businesses, colleges and universities, as well as, presented at state, national, and international conferences on a variety of topics and has received numerous local, state, national, and international awards for his work with children and adolescents. He has served as a member on the local school district’s diversity task force, the University of Georgia’s Board of Regents African American Male Initiative, and the National School Counselors Advisory Team for the College Board. Dr. Bailey has also served as a consultant for the Education Trust and the College Board and as the Membership chair and Executive Board Member for the International Association for Counseling. From 2011 to 2012 he served as the President for the Association of Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES). In the Fall of 2012, he was selected and served as the William Allen Boeing Endowed Chair and Distinguished Professor of Education at Seattle University. He is co-author of Project Gentlemen on the Move: A Model for Developing and Nurturing Academic and Social Excellence in African American Male Youth. He is the founder and director of the award winning enrichment program entitled Empowered Youth Programs (EYP) whose mission is to develop and nurture academic and social excellence in children and adolescents, with a special emphasis on children and adolescents of color. Over the past 25 years he and his wife, Dr. Mary E. Bradbury-Bailey, have dedicated their careers to working with children and adolescents through Empowered Youth Programs.

"Back around the turn of the century, I was on the Alliance for Work-Life Progress board, and some of the board members found their jobs and offices being downsized as a fairly lengthy recession set in. I have been in touch with many of these folks since then, and they have all done well, but mainly by changing careers. What they really needed was Career Management and Work-Life Integration, by Brad Harrington and Douglas Hall (2007). As the authors note, job ladders inside of corporations (and job security) are largely a thing of the past. For young or mature adults, the implications of that shift are enormous. Specializing can be dangerous, and making yourself indispensable may not be a great idea. So individual career planning becomes on one level more difficult and less useful because the unexpected is always just around the corner, but on another level far more important if you don't want to end up stuck doing work you don't like for a company you like even less... And this really is a work-family book, which is anything but surprising once you take in the implications of modern careers: the difficulties of navigating contemporary careers are heavily compounded for modern families, where dual-earners are the norm, and fathers as well as mothers expect to devote substantial time to children and, increasingly, elderly parents and relatives. And corporate work-life policies become important for a reason that is often downplayed: attracting talent. My reading of most of the literature on the business case for work-life is that it tends to emphasize talent retention. But that may be the wrong angle if the problem is getting the right people, and planning on fairly short 'career' duration. I should mention that much of the book is very much practical, with exercises designed to draw out the reader's values, aspirations, history, and family situation in order to make sense of -- and plan for -- the future. I highly recommend it for that practical

About the Author
Brad Harrington: Brad is the executive director of the Boston College Center for Work & Family (CWF) and a research professor of organization studies in the Carroll School of Management at Boston College. CWF is a national leader in helping organizations create effective workplaces that support and develop healthy and productive employees. The center pro­vides a bridge linking the academic community to the some of the world’s most progressive companies in the human resource arena.

Before coming to Boston College, Brad spent 20 years with Hewlett­Packard Company, working in a broad range of executive and management positions in quality improvement, human resources, education, manage­ment development, and organization development in the United States and Europe. His roles included chief quality officer for HP’s worldwide medical products business and head of HP’s management and organization develop­ment organization. Brad holds a bachelor’s degree in business administra­tion from Stonehill College, a master’s degree in psychology from Boston College, and a doctorate in human resource development and organization development from Boston University. Brad has consulted with many corpo­rations and healthcare organizations on strategic planning, cultural change, leadership development, career management, and work–life systems. In 2006, Brad was honored as one of the Ten Most Influential Men in the Work–Life Field.

Brad is married to Dr. Annie Soisson, and they have three children: Maggie, Hannah, and Dillon. Brad and his family reside in Winchester, Massachusetts.

Douglas T. Hall: Tim is the director of the Executive Development Roundtable and the Morton H. and Charlotte Friedman Professor of Management in the School of Management at Boston University. He is also faculty director of the MBA program. He has served as acting dean and asso­ciate dean of faculty development and faculty director for the master’s pro­grams at the School of Management. He received his graduate degrees from the Sloan School of Management at MIT. He has held faculty positions at Yale, York, Michigan State, and Northwestern universities and visiting posi­tions at Columbia, Minnesota, and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Tim’s books include Careers In and Out of Organizations, The Career Is Dead―Long Live the Career: A Relational Approach to Careers, Careers in Organizations, Organizational Climates and Careers, The Two-Career Couple, Experiences in Management and Organizational Behavior, Career Develop­ment in Organizations, Human Resource Management: Strategy Design and Implementation, and Handbook of Career Theory. He is a recipient of the American Psychological Association’s James McKeen Cattell Award (now called the Ghiselli Award) for research design, the American Society for Training and Development’s Walter Storey Professional Practice Award, and the Academy of Management’s Everett C. Hughes Award for Career Research. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and the Academy of Management, where he served as a member of the Board of Governors and as president of the Organizational Behavior Division and co-founder and president of the Careers Division.

Tim is married to Marcy Crary, and he has three children and five grandchildren.

Useful inside and outside of the classroom

I used this book as a textbook during graduate school, but found its application reached far outside the classroom. It was a quick and interesting read providing a balance of theory, exercises, and anecdotes. I found the exercises to be exceptionally useful. Performing a self-assessment using various tools helped me identify the values that are most important to me. Additional exercises, such as drafting a 10-year plan, helped me identify which jobs would enable me to reach my career and personal goals.

I would recommend this book to anyone struggling to decide "what they want to do" as well as people looking to achieve a better work-life balance. When I started reading the book, I was unsure what my next career move should be. When I finished, I felt confident in my next move, and now have a career plan based on my goals and desired lifestyle.

Very useful. Do the "homework" if it fits your style of learning

The Good

It does offer a detailed process for students to begin their job search and their careers.
A clear explanation of how the labor force and job market is changing.
Provides examples and templates on how to express one's goals in writing.
Good insight into the power of networking and meeting people.
Explains various types of work environments.

The Bad

At the time of this review, this book retails for $50.66. In my opinion, $20 is more reasonable.
There are sections that involving codifying your persona data. In this case, it is a question of what are your strengths and weaknesses, what does and does not interest you. Rank these stats accordingly. This is way too complicated for my style of learning. For those who enjoy building matrices and quantifying yourself, this may interest you.

Essential Guide for Today's Working Parents

Career Management and Work-Life Integration provides excellent career information and many great self-assessment activities. The main point of the book is that we all need to take control of our own careers given that no employer these days will do it for us. Beyond making this important point, the book then provides ways for the reader to understand what is happening in the world of work, and how best to manage their career in order to maximize personal and professional success.

As a working father with two young children and a demanding job, I found the book provides an excellent "how to" guide to better understanding and approaching the always difficult issue of striking the right balance. While I did not complete all the exercises in the book, I could see myself returning to it as a resource at different stages of my career/life. Overall, an excellent and highly useful read for any working people, especially working parents.

About the Author
Roger Pierangelo is an associate professor in the Department of Special Education and Literacy at Long Island University. He has been an administrator of special education programs and served for eighteen years as a permanent member of Committees on Special Education. He has over thirty years of experience in the public school system as a general education classroom teacher and school psychologist, and is a consultant to numerous private and public schools, PTAs, and SEPTA groups. Pierangelo has also been an evaluator for the New York State Office of Vocational and Rehabilitative Services and a director of a private clinic. He is a New York State licensed clinical psychologist, certified school psychologist, and a Board Certified Diplomate Fellow in Child and Adolescent Psychology and Forensic Psychology. Pierangelo is currently president of The National Association of Special Education Teachers, executive director of The American Academy of Special Education Professionals, and vice-president of The National Association of Parents with Children in Special Education.

Pierangelo earned his BS degree from St. John's University, his MS from Queens College, Professional Diploma from Queens College, PhD from Yeshiva University, and Diplomate Fellow in Child and Adolescent Psychology and Forensic Psychology from the International College of Professional Psychology. He is a member of the American Psychological Association, New York State Psychological Association, Nassau County Psychological Association, New York State Union of Teachers, and Phi Delta Kappa.

Pierangelo is the coauthor of numerous books, including The Big Book of Special Education Resources and The Step-by-Step Book Series for Special Educators.

George Giuliani is an assistant professor at Hofstra University's School of Education and Allied Health and Human Services, in the Department of Counseling, Research, Special Education, and Rehabilitation. He is the executive director of the National Association of Special Education Professionals, president of the National Association of Parents with Children in Special Education (NAPCSE), vice-president of the National Association of Special Education Teachers, and an educational consultant for various school districts. He has provided numerous workshops for parents and teachers on a variety of special education and psychological topics.

Giuliani earned Board Certification as a Diplomate Fellow in Child and Adolescent Psychology and Forensic Psychology from the International College of Professional Psychology. Giuliani is also a New York State licensed psychologist, certified school psychologist, and has an extensive private practice focusing on children with special needs. He is a member of the American Psychological Association, New York State Psychological Association, the National Association of School Psychologists, Suffolk County Psychological Association, Psi Chi, American Association of University Professors, and the Council for Exceptional Children. Giuliani earned his BA from the College of the Holy Cross, MS from St. John's University, JD from City University Law School, and PsyD from Rutgers University, The Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology.

Giuliani is the coauthor of numerous books, including The Big Book of Special Education Resources and The Step-by-Step Book Series for Special Educators.
