Outstanding Book!

I taught several statistics courses using Statistics: A Gentle Introduction (1st ed.). I just received the 2nd edition. I have shelves of stats books and these are by far the most down to earth, easy to understand stats books I've found and are ideal for teaching. The 2nd edition builds upon the first edition and offers practice problems and sample test questions at the end of each chapter. The 2nd edition includes SPSS output and a description of the output for regression & correlation (but not for ANOVA, t-tests, chi-square). The 2nd edition includes a nice description of confidence intervals. I highly recommend this book!

Best Stats Textbook on the Market

This has to be the most "gentle" book about statistics on the market. I can actually say that I now understand the basic statistical methods! Too often, statistics books give you too much information all at once, which can be confusing to beginners. This book gradually lays it out step by step and gives clear examples of almost every possible variation. Authors of statistics texts often confuse the reader in their attempts to impress them with technical language. This book is written in language understandable to beginners and proceeds at a digestable pace. Plus, it includes brief glimpses of historical information to give the reader a broader understanding of the subject. I highly recommend this as a text for introductory statistics classes or as a refresher for anyone!

Makes Statistics Simple

This book was fantastic! It outlined the basic concepts of statistics in a way that didn't completely confuse the student. I was able to pass all my tests and actually UNDERSTAND my coursework. Kudos to the author--I HIGHLY recommend this book to the beginning statistics student.

About the Author
Lynn Kirkland is associate professor of early childhood education at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She also directs the UAB Children's Creative Learning Center's summer enrichment program for children. Kirkland has published numerous articles on early childhood and literacy development, and is co-author of Connectors: Content Area Studies in Early Childhood published by the Association for Childhood Education International.

Jerry Aldridge is professor of curriculum and instruction and coordinator of the doctoral program in early childhood education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is a former president of the United States chapter of the World Organization for Early Childhood Education and currently serves on the publications committee of the Association for Childhood Education International. Aldridge has published numerous articles in early childhood, literacy, and special education.



Patricia Kuby, Ph.D., is professor and chair of early childhood education at Athens State University in Alabama. She learned to appreciate the importance of environmental print as her children read signs and logos while traveling on family car trips. Her three children are now all educators themselves. Patricia is past president of the Alabama Association for the Education of Young Children. She has published numerous articles on literacy development and early childhood.

This is a great book for any teacher

This is a great book for any teacher, of any grade! The authors provide many different games that utilize the print found in our daily environment to make learning literacy fun and easy for children. I would recommend this for anyone who teaches or has young children. Very easy to understand, with clear, simple directions for all the games included.

Convenor of the Strategic Research Program: 'Education, Equity and Social Identities' Member of Melbourne Educational Research Institute (MERI) Member of MGSE Equal Opportunity in Education Advisory Committee My research interests lie in interdisciplinary and socio-cultural studies of education, identity, equity/inequality and social change. My research projects and publications encompass theoretical and empirical studies of gender and youth, history and sociology of schooling, curriculum and subjectivity, equity and difference, and feminism and educational reform. I have recently completed a major qualitative longitudinal study of secondary school students and a cross-generational study of culturally marginalised young women. I am currently working on an international comparative study of disenfranchised urban youth and a book on methodologies for researching social, historical and biographical change. I am also beginning a new study on the cultural history of adolescence in Australia, 1930s-1970s

Rachel Thomson is Professor of Social Resaerch in the School of Health and Social Welfare. Rachel has been involved in a major longitudinal qualitative study of young people transitions to adulthood, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council since 1996 through the Children 5-16 and the Young People, Citizenship and Social Change programmes. The study is currently being archived with the support of a grant from the ESRC, and will be made available for secondary analysis (see www.lsbu.ac.uk/inventingadulthoods). Her research interests focus on gender identities, social change, sexuality, values, transitions and popular culture.

About the Author

Gayle H. Gregory is first and foremost a teacher, having experienced teaching and learning in elementary, middle, and secondary schools, community colleges, and universities. She has had extensive district-wide experience as a curriculum consultant and staff development coordinator. Gayle was principal/course director at York University for the Faculty of Education, teaching in the teacher education program.
Her areas of expertise include brain-compatible learning, differentiated instructional and assessment strategies, block scheduling, emotional intelligence, student motivation, RTI Tier One, collaborative learning, common core, renewal of secondary schools, enhancing teacher quality, coaching and mentoring, managing change, and building professional learning communities. She also a trainer for Visible Learning Plus with Corwin.

She is an author of numerous books related to educational neuroscience and differentiated instruction, assessment, and curriculum, including the following titles:

Lin Kuzmich, of KCS, Inc., is an educational consultant, professor, and author from Loveland, CO. She served the Thompson School District in several roles as the assistant superintendent, executive director of secondary and elementary instruction, director of professional development, and a building principal. Her school was named a 2000 winner of the John R. Irwin Award for Academic Excellence and Improvement. In addition, for the past decade she has been involved in staff development through several universities and the Tointon Institute for Educational Change. Kuzmich is an adjunct professor at both Colorado State University and University of Northern Colorado. She is a senior consultant for the International Center for Leadership in Education, has provided training and consulting to school districts around the country, and has presented at numerous national conferences.

Short and reasonable cheap but not fairly interesting

I got this for a class. Note this a book about studying leadership, not a book about leadership. It is a primer for those who want to study leadership and bone up on all the academic work to date. It will not teach you how be a leader.

Easy Breezy Overview

Writing is clear, concise and humor is a great addition. Authors also add inspiration for scholars and professionals looking to increase their leadership studies. I would have given it more stars, but the font size seemed small. Maybe that's how the book gets to be "very short".

About the Author

Cathy Nutbrown is Professor of Education and Director for Research at the School of Education, University of Sheffield. Her work has involved the role of artists in residence in early years settings; inclusion in the early years; children’s rights; curriculum development; early literacy work with parents; and the ethical issues of research involving young children.

Cathy teaches on the Masters and Doctoral Programmes in Early Childhood Education. She began her career as a teacher of young children and has since worked in a range of settings and roles with children, parents, teachers and other early childhood educators.

Cathy is committed to finding ways of working ‘with respect’ with young children, and sees the concept of quality in the context of what it means to develop curriculum and pedagogy in the early years with the ambition of working in a climate of ‘respectful education’. She is Editor in Chief of the Journal of Early Childhood Research and has authored several books with SAGE.

About the Author

Cindy L. Miller-Perrin is currently Professor of Psychology and Blanche E. Seaver Professor of Social Science at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. She is also a clinical child psychologist and has worked with developmentally delayed, maltreated, and other troubled children and their families. She has coauthored three books, including Child Sexual Abuse: Sharing the Responsibility (with S. Wurtele, 1992), Child Maltreatment: An Introduction (with R. Perrin, Sage, 1999, 2007), and Family Violence Across the Lifespan (with O. Barnett & R. Perrin, Sage 1997, 2005, 2011). She is also the author or coauthor of numerous articles and book chapters on topics including child sexual abuse prevention, perceptions associated with child maltreatment, family violence, and psychology and religion. She enjoys teaching and researching with undergraduates and is the recipient of the 2008 Howard A. White Award for Teaching Excellence. She received her doctorate from Washington State University.



Robin D. Perrin is currently Professor of Sociology at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. His research interests and publications are in the areas of interpersonal violence, deviance theory, the social construction of social problems, and the sociology of religion. He is the coauthor of three books: Social Deviance: Being, Behaving, and Branding (with D. Ward & T. Carter, 1991), Child Maltreatment: An Introduction (with C. Miller-Perrin, Sage, 1999; 2007), and Family Violence Across the Lifespan (with O. Barnett & C. Miller-Perrin, Sage, 1997, 2005; 2011). He is the author or coauthor of numerous articles on a variety of topics related to religion, deviance, and interpersonal violence. He is the recipient of the 2004 Howard A. White Award for Teaching Excellence. He received his doctorate in sociology from Washington State University in 1989. Following his doctoral studies he was Assistant Professor of Sociology at Seattle Pacific University in Seattle, Washington.

cheaply made and uninteresting

Though this book is packed with information it is made cheaply, its very depressing and the writer seemed not to care whether the reader would be interested or not. I felt the book just listed things. It does have some examples of things but it can be unclear in a lot of topics. And the pages fell out just from opening and closing the book to read it.

I was prescribed this book to read for my back and leg pain. I noticed that there are questionnaires and exercises which seems to really engage the reader. I'm excited to read this as people have told me that this book is a miracle.

Good (maybe best) textbook for introduction to child maltreatment

I teach courses on child maltreatment to undergraduate and graduate students. When I reviewed the available texts a few years ago, my impression was that this one was the best. There is now also a new edition.
