About the Author
Susan Ehrlich Martin recently retired from government after 15 years as a program director at the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Prior to that, she directed several research studies at the Police Foundation and the National Research Council. Her previous and continuing research interests focus on women's problems as workers, victims, and substance abusers. Her other books include Breaking and Entering: Police Women on Patrol (University of California Press, 1980) and On the Move: The Status of Women in Policing (Police Foundation, 1990).

Nancy Jurik is a sociologist and professor in the School of Justice & Social Inquiry at Arizona State University.  She has published research articles in the areas of gender and work, professionalization, changing workplace organizations, self-employment, and economic development programs. She has also published Bootstrap Dreams: U.S. Microenterprise Development in an Era of Welfare Reform (Cornell University Press, 2005).

About the Author
Ronald Mah, an educator and licensed marriage and family therapist, has worked in early childhood education for 16 years. A credentialed elementary and secondary teacher, he is the author of Difficult Behavior in Early Childhood and The One-Minute Temper Tantrum Solution (2006 and 2008, Corwin Press). He wrote the Asian Pacific Islander Parent Education Support curriculum (DHS-San Francisco, 1996). Mah has DVDs on child development and behavior (Fixed Earth Films), and has been involved in community and high school mental health clinics, severe emotional disturbance, at-risk youth, welfare-to-work, and Head Start programs. A graduate college instructor and Board of Directors member of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists and of the California Kindergarten Association, Mah combines concepts, principles, and philosophy with practical techniques and guidelines for effective and productive results. Mah has a psychotherapy practice in San Leandro, California where he works with children, teens, adults, couples, and families.

About the Author

Gayle H. Gregory is first and foremost a teacher, having experienced teaching and learning in elementary, middle, and secondary schools, community colleges, and universities. She has had extensive district-wide experience as a curriculum consultant and staff development coordinator. Gayle was principal/course director at York University for the Faculty of Education, teaching in the teacher education program.
Her areas of expertise include brain-compatible learning, differentiated instructional and assessment strategies, block scheduling, emotional intelligence, student motivation, RTI Tier One, collaborative learning, common core, renewal of secondary schools, enhancing teacher quality, coaching and mentoring, managing change, and building professional learning communities. She also a trainer for Visible Learning Plus with Corwin.

She is an author of numerous books related to educational neuroscience and differentiated instruction, assessment, and curriculum, including the following titles:

"Everyone agrees that what teachers do in the classrooms should be based on what we know about how people learn. However, until recently, we have had few clues to unlock the "black box" that holds the secrets of the brain. New research from the neurosciences is changing this scenario. Our understanding of the neurological underpinnings of the learning process has increased tremendously in the past few decades. We now have a much more solid foundation on which to hase educational decisions. But while the theoretical information is readily available, the translation of this information has not been. How do teachers sift through the enormous amount of available information and determine what applies and what doesn't? What does a brain-compatible classroom look like? Gayle Gregory and Terence Parry have tackled this challenging job of translating the research into classroom practice and provided teachers with what they've been looking for, a guide to brain-compatible instruction. This book begins with a very understandable synthesis of cognitive research, pulling from the work of leading neuroscientists, psychologists, and educators. An introduction to brain organization and architecture, the role of emotion in attention, and memory systems leads to a listing of general principles of how the brain works. This leads to a discussion of pedagogical theory and how pedagogical researchers and other education professionals have identified a number of powerful instructional techniques that enhance learning. Instruction that fits well with how the brain learns best is an admirable goal, but it will be difficult to reach if the way we measure attainment doesn't match the instruction. Gregory and Parry address this issue by including an excellent section on assessment. There's a strong possibility that this will become on e of the most used books on the educator's bookshelf, and that's all to the good because ultimately it will be the students (and their brains) who benefit.

Worth the money, and time!--Great resource for the thoughtful planner.

This book investigates various instructional strategies which are based on recent brain research and suggest various ways of helping students. I found the book to be well organized, making it a great resource to keep handy when planning lessons. I use this book when I am designing lesson plans, and find that the book makes it easy for me to address the various components of brain compatible learning. As a teacher in my 5th year, this book still provides a number of important resources and elements that makes my planning much more efficient and thoughtful.

Pretty Useful

This book is pretty useful for teachers. I was required to buy it for a college class I took this summer. I learned some things about brain-based research I never knew before. It has lots of different activities that would be useful to review as a teacher. It's worth a read, in my opinion. It's worth checking out.

great resource for teaching methodologies

This book explores instructional strategies which are based on recent brain research. Clear explanations of instructional tools (and how, when and why to use them) is this book's stength. The book is well organized, making it a great resource to teachers. I use this book when I am designing lesson plans for the week ahead as the book encourages me to use a variety of instructional strategies and provides guidance in their implementation.

About the Author
"My research interests are in criminology, socio-legal studies, social research methodology, and new technologies for social research. In criminology I have particular expertise in policing, having conducted studies of police training, police occupational culture, community and neighbourhood policing, equal opportunities in the police service, police corruption, and comparative research on international police systems. In socio-legal studies I have particular interests in the criminal courts and the experiences of lay people during the criminal trial process. My study of lay participants' experience of trials of cases of physical violence won the Socio-Legal Studies Association Hart Prize 2007 for the Best Socio-Legal Book.

In social research methodology my primary expertise is in qualitative methods, particularly the practice and ethics of participant observation, the status of interview data, and software for the analysis of qualitative data, in which latter I co-direct the UK national centre for qualitative software. I also have substantial expertise in multiple-method research and methodological 'triangulation', secondary analysis of archival qualitative data, online research methods, and the application of grid and high performance computing to social research, where I have a particular interest in the use of Access Grid technology for 'virtual fieldwork'. My paper on the latter was shortlisted for the Sage Prize for Innovation and Excellence 2007.

Raymond M. Lee is Reader in Social Research Methods in the Department of Social Policy and Social Science, Royal Holloway University of London. His research interests include research methodology, the sociology of religion and the sociology of labour markets. His specific methodological interests include the problems and issues which surround research on 'sensitive' topics, and the impact of new technologies on the research process. His books on methodology include Doing Research on Sensitive Topics and Dangerous Fieldwork. In addition, he has edited Using Computers in Qualitative Research (with Nigel Fielding), Researching Sensitive Topics (with Claire Renzetti) and Information Technology for the Social Scientist.

Grant Blank is Survey Research Fellow at Oxford Internet Institute (OII), University of Oxford. He is a sociologist who studies the social and cultural impact of the Internet and other new communication media. He is also interested in cultural sociology, especially reviews and cultural evaluation.Grant began his career as an independent consultant based in Chicago Illinois specializing in research design, statistical analysis, and database design. He previously taught at American University in Washington DC. He completed his PhD on the sociology of reviews at the University of Chicago in 1999, and joined OII in 2010.

About the Author
KATHLEEN KELLEY REARDON, professor at U. of Southern California, has published 10 books and been a featured political blogger for Huffington Post since 2006.  In addition to her extensive work with First Star, dedicated to improving the lives of America's foster children, she was co-principal investigator and author on the feasibility study that launched Starbright, later chaired by Steven Spielberg and conjoined with Starlight. Her first book, Persuasion in Practice, (now in a revised edition), was termed by Public Opinion Quarterly "a landmark contribution to the field" of research and theory in persuasion. Her first trade book, They Don't Get It, Do They?, was based on her initial Harvard Business Reviewarticle "The Memo Every Woman Keeps in Her Desk," an HBR reprint best seller. Her latest HBR article is "Courage as a Skill."  She published The Secret Handshake in 2000, an Amazon business and nonfiction bestseller that looks at the politics of business; It's All Politics, which offers a deeper analysis of workplace politics; The Skilled Negotiator, and more recently Comebacks at Work. Her Guide to International Business Gift Giving has been used for many years by the White House Office of Protocol and protocol chiefs for nations and businesses worldwide. She has appeared on The Today Show, NBC Nightly News and Good Morning America, and her research and writing have been the subject of hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles and broadcast segments. Dr. Reardon was earlier a professor of Communication Sciences at UCONN. She earned her Ph.D. at UMass Amherst and won the NCA national dissertation award. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi and Mortar Board. THE MOST IMPORTANTAND READABLE BOOK ABOUT CHILD ABUSE IN YEARS

This passionatre and thoughtful book breaks new ground and voices in public, loud and clear, the primacy of children as our only future, the shoddy state of much of child welfare in the United States (one from dead last according to UNICEF!) and the steps we can take to improve things right now. Hats off to Kathleen Reardon for caring enough to research and write it!

About the Author

Dr. Joseph Wronka is Professor of Social Work, Springfield College, Springfield, MA, Representative to the United Nations in Geneva for the International Association of Schools of Social Work (IASSW) and part-time representative for the People’s Movement for Human Rights Learning to the UN in New York. He is also President of Human Rights Action International (HRAI).  Dr. Wronka  received a Fulbright Senior Specialist award, in the discipline of social work with specialities in social justice and poverty and sub specialities in human rights, psychology, and existential-phenomenology. In 2015 he went to Pakistan and Austria as a Fulbright Scholar. Select academic appointments included: West Georgia College, St. Francis College, New York University, Caldwell College, Ramapo College, Chukchi Community College, the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, Kotzebue Technical Center, College of the Holy Cross, Simmons, Boston College, and in Europe, Fachhochschule  at Berne and Zurich, Switzerland; Vienna, Sankt-Poelton, and Innsbruck, Austria; and Hanover, Germany. He was also Visiting Scholar at Brandeis University and Visiting Fellow at the University of Delhi, India. He was also a counselor at alcoholism and methadone maintenance treatment centers; clinician in  community mental health centers and in private practice; director of a mental health/substance abuse center; human rights commissioner; Vice President of the World Citizen Foundation; board member to the Coalition for a Strong United Nations and Amherst Media, where he is presently producer of “Creating a Human Rights Culture”.  His website is:  www.humanrightsculture.org

          Published widely in scholarly and popular fora, he has presented his work in roughly eighteen countries. His interest is primarily the development of social change strategies to implement human rights principles, in other words, the creation of a human rights culture which he views as the pillars of social justice.  Such principles mirror substantively millennia of teaching in various spiritual and ethical belief systems, which assert ultimately that every person, everywhere ought to be guaranteed their human rights, and live with human dignity and to their potential, without discrimination. At times, he refers to himself as an “adventure junkie.” He also likes to travel, swim laps; kayak; fish; ride his bike; and play classical music on the piano and concert and ethnic pieces on the accordion.

an outstanding book on human rights

There is nothing stuffy about this book on the context of human rights within the framework of human needs. Let yourself read through the first few pages, and you will likely want to read it all the way through. Human Rights and Social Justice is must reading for all who enjoy reading prose that is highly literate and historically relevant. Wronka's extensive international experience provides insights that lend themselves well to a holistic understanding of human rights as the bedrock of social justice. Educators throughout the helping and legal professions will find much of value here to enlighten students and inform their lectures on topics related to public health and human needs. The critical thinking questions that are infused throughout provide excellent material for class discussion.

About the Author
Lyn Richards (B.A. Hon., political science; M.A., sociology) is a qualitative research writer and consultant and Adjunct Professor in the Graduate School of Business at RMIT University in Melbourne. As a family sociologist, she published four books and many papers on Australian families and women’s roles. As a methodologist, she taught graduate and undergraduate qualitative research at La Trobe University and went on to write for and teach the teachers. Her most recent book is Handling Qualitative Data, Second Edition (SAGE, 2009). In university research with Tom Richards, she developed the NUD*IST software and founded QSR International, Melbourne. In interaction with the researchers using the software, and later development teams at QSR, she worked on the design of the subsequent versions (to N6) and then NVivo, as a principal member of the QSR software-development teams and author of the software’s documentation. She was an invited speaker at all of the conferences in the first decade of qualitative computing and a leading teacher and trainer internationally in qualitative computing and the handling of qualitative data. Richards has taught qualitative methods and qualitative software to some 4,000 researchers in 15 countries, and learned from them all.

Janice M. Morse, PhD (Nurs), PhD (Anthro), FAAN is a professor and Presidential Endowed Chair at the University of Utah College of Nursing, and Professor Emeritus, University of Alberta, Canada., from 1991-1996, she also held a position as professor at The Pennsylvania State University. From 1997-2007, she was the founding Director and Scientific Director of the International Institute for Qualitative Methodology, University of Alberta, founding editor for the International Journal of Qualitative Methods, and Editor of the Qual Press monograph series. She remains the founding editor for Qualitative Health Research, (now in Volume 2, Sage1), is currently editor for the monograph series Developing Qualitative Inquiry, and The Essentials of Qualitative Inquiry (Left Coast Press). Her research programs are in the areas of suffering and comforting, preventing patient falls, and developing qualitative methods. In 2011, she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement in Qualitative Inquiry from the International Center for Qualitative Inquiry, was an inaugural inductee into the Sigma Theta Tau International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame (2010), the 5th recipient of the Episteme Award (also Sigma Theta Tau). She received awarded honorary doctorates from the University of Newcastle (Australia) and Athabasca University (Canada). She is the author of 460 articles and chapters and 19 books on qualitative research methods, suffering, comforting and patient falls.

This book is a) very readable b) flows logically c) covers a LOT of material d) makes a great resource for writing a QRM proposal e) is a great resource when planning and executing a qualitative study. A MUST have for the new student and makes an excellent text for an intro class.

One of the best!

This is one of the best qualitative textbook that I've ever read. (And I read extensively.) It's easy to read. The writing style is concise and unpretensious. Unlike other bulky research method textbooks, it contains less than 300 pages. I use it as a portable book on the go.

The title may lead people to think that it is for beginners who haven't undertaken their studies. At one point, this holds true. The book is written for people who haven't committed to a specific research design. It walks you through various methodological routes, illustrating the possible shape of findings based on the choice of the research approach. However, I also found this book helpful for those who already have some exposure to qualitative research. (The only relatively minor downside is that I found the section on coding pretty dry. It's not as enlightening as other sections.)

Excellent overview of qualitative methods which provides descriptive and useful definitions, while distinctly clarifying,i.e. phenomonology, grounded theory, ethnography.
Easy-reading without being elementary.
Perfect as I embark on my PhD in Nursing!
