About the Author
Andrew S. Rothstein has had a distinguished career as a teacher, administrator, and researcher. His diverse and enriching experiences in international schools, special education, public schools, and consulting have given him a broad perspective of the contexts in which children learn. As an author and presenter, he has achieved wide acclaim for his work in improving school performance by focusing on improving instruction and its supervision. His work in integrating many subject areas through writing has been highly effective in improving test scores in districts across the country. As principal, Rothstein led site-based improvements that resulted in strong increases in student academic performance. While superintendent of a regional school serving children with severe physical disabilities and health impairments, Rothstein reorganized staff development, created new curricula, and integrated technology into the instructional program for children for children from prekindergarten through high school. He has been an adjunct professor at Southern Connecticut State University and Touro College. Rothstein earned a master's degree in special education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a doctorate in educational administration from New York University.

Evelyn Rothstein has been an educational consultant specializing in teaching writing across the curriculum for the past twenty years. With a background in classroom teaching and a specialization in linguistics and language development, she has trained teachers and implemented her strategy-based Writing As Learning and Write for Mathematics programs in hundreds of schools and school districts throughout the United States. She is the author of numerous books and articles, including Writing as Learning and Write for Mathematics. Rothstein is a graduate of the City University of New York and Teachers College, Columbia University with degrees in education, speech, reading, and psycholinguistics.

Dr. Gerald Lauber, currently Chief Operating Officer of the National Urban Alliance previously served as superintendent in three New York State school districts, where he initiated programs to meet the needs of diverse student populations while stabilizing long-range fiscal plans. Under his administration, state-of-the-art computer assisted instructional programs, as well as innovative writing and mathematics programs were put into place. As President and CEO of Purewater Sciences and Melric Technologies he developed a corporate perspective on what schools must provide to prepare children for success in the workplace and the world in which they live. Dr. Lauber's writings have appeared in Electronic School, THE Journal, American School Boards Journal , New York Slate Education, Viewpoints, Newsday and other publications. Dr. Lauber co-authored Writing as Learning and Write for Mathematics and makes numerous presentations for school districts across the country. Dr. Lauber has an MA and MED in School Administration from Teachers College and an Ed.D. in Systems Administration from New York University.

About the Author

Elizabeth Bell (Ph.D., University of Texas, 1983) has taught Performance Studies for thirty years in three departments of communication (University of Texas at Austin, University of North Carolina, and University of South Florida). Her graduate courses include Performance Theory, Feminism and Performance, Texts in Performance, and Performance of Nonfiction; undergraduate offerings are Oral Tradition (a theory-based, large lecture class), performance classes in literary genres (poetry, prose fiction, poetic drama), and group performance. She is the co-editor of From Mouse to Mermaid: The Politics of Film, Gender, and Culture (Indiana 1995).

Needs clarity and an editor

This book is bizarrely unclear and poorly written. She has a tendency to take simple ideas and complicate them using odd metaphors that don't make sense. It reads like a first draft of a freshman's essay where she doesn't quite know what she's trying to say. Occasionally she seems to misunderstand established terms in the field of communication, like God and Devil terms.
People usually assume that communication is a throwaway major, that it's a simple and easy way to get a degree. It's not organic chemistry, but it definitely requires a text that puts a little more thought into expressing complicated ideas.
There are good things about it, but they're limited to what she has a clear comprehension of. She knows mimesis, poiesis, etc, but go into more complex ideas and she lets you down.
She bolds important definitions and words, but for the most part the book is disorganized and not as clear as it should be.

It is common experience that we cannot enter another culture as fully as we do our own is patent. It is especially the case if the other culture is marked powerfully by satu bangsar, satu agama, satu bahasa: one race, one religion, one language. These three pillars define a reality that suffuses and binds the life and contacts of individual, community and nation. In this sense, everything is culture which, moreover, creates and sustains a unique, all-encompassing identity that simultaneously consolidates us, as distinguished from them. Consequently - as we know only too well - difference is the first, most durable perception generated by cross-cultural contact. Thus, the mathematics governing the complexities of such contact is not arithmetic, not algebra but calculus and beyond. Even when we agree, there is still considerable room for disagreement and misperception. The mapping is open-ended. Moreover, the study of issues cannot be called development. It is more in the nature of a change, a shift, because there is no certainty of linear progress characteristic of the hard sciences. A corollary to this is that no cultural idea or practice is permanently out-of-date.

In these circumstances, the state of the discipline relies on empirical inputs from as many sources as possible, and approaches. Coverage is attentive to both theory as well as case studies, while remaining constantly mindful of that vast terrain that lies between the two. It is here that Cultures and Globalization is unique, is indispensable. Each volume is comprehensive, especially in the way it creates space for different ways of addressing issues and sub-issues, of how it extends area studies to include new geographies and therefore more representative of globalization. As contributors include practitioners, the insights are deeper and closer to the whole notion of creativity which is at the core of all cultures. This is an advantage that must not be overlooked. About the Author
Helmut K. Anheier, PhD, is President and Dean at the Hertie School of Governance, and holds a chair of sociology at Heidelberg University. He received his PhD from Yale University in 1986, was a senior researcher at John Hopkins School of Public Policy, Professor of Public Policy and Social Welfare at UCLA's Luskin School of Public Affairs, and Centennial Professor at the London School of Economics. Professor Anheier founded and directed the Centre for Civil Society at LSE, the Center for Civil Society at UCLA, and the Center for Social Investment at Heidelberg. Before embarking on an academic career, he served as social affairs officer to the United Nations. 

He is author of over 400 publications, and won various international prizes and recognitions for his scholarship. Amongst his recent book publications are Nonprofit Organizations - Theory, Management, Policy (London: Routledge, 2014), A Versatile American Institution: The Changing Ideals and Realities of Philanthropic Foundations with David Hammack (Washington, DC: Brookings, 2013) and The Global Studies Encyclopedia with Mark Juergensmeyer (5 vols, Sage, 2012).  He is the principal academic lead of the Hertie School´s annual Governance Report (Oxford University Press, 2013-), and currently working on projects relating to indicator research, social innovation, and success and failure in philanthropy.

Yudhishthir Raj Isar is an independent analyst, advisor and public speaker who straddles different worlds of cultural theory, experience and practice. He is Professor of Cultural Policy Studies at The American University of Paris and Adjunct Professor at the Institute for Culture and Society, University of Western Sydney. He has also been maître de conference at Sciences Po, Paris. Professor Isar is co-editor of the Cultures and Globalization Series (SAGE). He is a trustee of civil society cultural organisations and consultant to international organisations and foundations and Past President of Culture Action Europe. Earlier, at UNESCO, where he served from 1973 to 2002, he was notably Executive Secretary of the World Commission on Culture and Development and Director of the International Fund for the Promotion of Culture.

Excellent Introduction for resarches, lecturers and students

The book provides a very concise introduction of creativity,innovation and cultural expression linking the terms to each other and explaining their value as heuristic concepts against the background of increasing global interrelations. The Compediums seems especially recommendable for students of globalizations since it combines sections about theroretical approaches and methodological questions(e.g. the second part focussing on indicator suites) with a large collection of articels dealing with specific examples covering political and cultural dimension of globalization.
Another advantage wich will catch the attention of students and make it easier to arouse interest in these topics is the "innovative approach" used in the scientific graph section at the end of the book. (Just have a look)

Likewise, the Volume is highly instrumental for planning and scheduling courses on Creativity and Innovation. While the introductory section at the beginning are especially suitable for undergarduate classes the case studies in middle section fit in consolidation or research seminars.

In sum, I believe the book to be highly recommendabel for any professional occupied with studying Globalization, the diffusion of cultural expressions and mechanisms and constraits of creativity.

Scott T. Young is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Management, Kellstadt Graduate School of Business at DePaul University. Professor Young has published numerous articles in journals such as the International Journal of Operations and Production Management, Review of Business, International Journal of Production Research, Journal of Operations Management, Journal of World Business, Information and Management, International Business Review, Production and Inventory Management Journal, Production and Operations Management, International Journal of Purchasing and Materials Management, and the Journal of Education for Business. In addition, he is author of Managing Global Operations, (with Winter Nie), Westport, CT: Quorum Books, 1996.

Entertaining textBook

This was by far the most entertaining textbook I used this semester. It had a lot of humor, which I appreciated, studying a 150 dollar accounting book at the same time. I liked how the book gave examples like NFL quarterback productivity, which made sense.

After reading the book, I feel that the author got short of what I was expecting. The book is just not good enought for what I was looking for. My experience is that the best way to acquire knowledge in this area is to talk to real Operations Managers with a lot of years of experience and write another good book.

As a postgrad student embarking on research in the field of early childhood literacy, I found this book easily-digestible. It provides a good overview into the methodology of such research - has breadth, but not depth. About the Author

Douglas Llewellyn teaches science education courses at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY. Previously, he was the K-12 Director of Science at the Rochester City School District, a secondary school principal, and a middle school science teacher. Llewellyn is a frequent speaker at state and national conferences on inquiry- and argument-based teaching, constructivist learning, and science leadership.

Inquire Within, perhaps the best source on inquiry out there

Inquire Within: Implementing Inquiry-Based Science Standards Llewellyn states that inquiry must be prepared in a crock pot, not a microwave. Meaning, to incorporate inquiry into your classroom, your grade level, and woven with your teaching style, takes time. Inquiry can have many definitions, yet the outcome from reading this book is that you can incorporate inquiry so very easily. A very reader friendly book that is on the top of my reference books on inquiry. I have taught 7th & 8th grade science for 15 years, I am a staff developer, an adjunct instructor for science methods at a local teacher college, and I highly recommend Inquire Within.

An outstanding resource for teachers

There are a plethora of books out about inquiry, the hot new buzzword in science education. This one has real substance. As a scientist, I think Llewellyn captures the true nature of science inquiry. As a teacher and professional developer, I especially like the self-assessments and rubrics to help make the transition from traditional practice to inquiry-based practice in the classroom. I use it so often that I keep losing it because I am always lending it to someone. This book will be useful to anyone who teaches science and wants to reach more kids more effectively.

Rating the Content of the Book - not the construction

Inquire Within is a fantastic foundational book on teaching using inquiry methods in science. The author provides a detailed overview and appropriate background information, as well as practical examples and case studies. I love this text and I'm sorry to see this book getting a bad rating because other reviews are focusing only on the construction of the book itself, not the content.

About the Author

Cathy Collins Block is a Professor of Education at Texas Christian University. She has taught every grade level from preschool to graduate school, and was elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the International Reading Association from 2002-2005. She has served or is presently serving on the Board of Directors of the National Reading Conference. Nobel Learning Communities, IBM Educational Board of Directors, and the National Center for Learning Disabilities. She presently serves on the Editorial Boards for the Journal of Educational Psychology, Reading Research Quarterly, The Reading Teacher, National Reading Conference Yearbook, and America Tomorrow. She has written more than 30 books and 80 research-based articles relative to literacy instruction and teacher education. She has also served or is serving on several elementary/middle school authorial writing teams for public/private school textbooks and literacy curriculum materials. She has written for Walt Disney Corporation, PBS Television Stations and other national media companies. She has received numerous honors as a teacher, including Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers and Who’s Who in the World.



Susan E. Israel is an independent researcher, writer, and literacy consultant and currently serves as President and Director of Reading Alliance for Catholic Education in Indiana, where she works with small and large corporations to enhance literacy products. Her special research interests are in the areas of reading comprehension, writing, and child-mind development as it relates to literacy processes. Israel served as assistant professor at the University of Dayton, and in 2005 she was awarded the University’s Panhellenic Council Outstanding Professor Award. She has also served on the national faculty at the University of Notre Dame Summer Program, where she taught reading and language arts methods. A former elementary teacher, she was awarded the 1998 teacher-researcher grant from the International Reading Association (IRA). Having been an active member of the IRA for over a decade, she has served on a number of IRA committees and interest groups and recently was president of the History of Literacy Special Interest Group. In addition, she has been active with the National Reading Conference. Israel has authored, coauthored, or edited over 15 books and volumes and is the senior editor of the recently published comprehensive volume, Handbook of Research on Reading Comprehension (Israel & Duffy, 2008). Other recent publications include Teachers Taking Action: A Comprehensive Guide to Teacher Research (with Cynthia Lassonde, 2008), Reading First and Beyond (with Cathy Collins Block, 2005), Collaborative Literacy (2006), Shaping the Reading Field (2007), Poetic Possibilities (2006), and Quotes to Inspire Great Reading Teachers (2006).

About the Author

Arlene Fink (PhD) is Professor of Medicine and Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles, and president of the Langley Research Institute. Her main interests include evaluation and survey research and the conduct of research literature reviews as well as the evaluation of their quality. Dr. Fink has conducted scores of evaluation studies in public health, medicine, and education. She is on the faculty of UCLA’s Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program and is a scientific and evaluation advisor to UCLA’s Gambling Studies and IMPACT (Improving Access, Counseling & Treatment for Californians with Prostate Cancer) programs. She consults nationally and internationally for agencies such as L’institut de Promotion del la Prévention Secondaire en Addictologie (IPPSA) in Paris, France, and Peninsula Health in Victoria, Australia. Professor Fink has taught and lectured extensively all over the world and is the author of more than 130 peer-reviewed articles and 15 textbooks.

Great idea, poorly executed

Since the ony other reviews on here are in regards to the physical condition of the product, I thought I would write a quick one regarding the content.
This book is heavily influenced by the medical field and non-clinical students generally have a difficult time relating to much of the concepts.
I feel that the book is incredibly repetitive and difficult to use in a classroom setting. I teach a research class that requires this book. We are actively looking to find a replacement as this text does not lend itself to a productive curiculum. It is very dry and makes the research process seem like an exhausting, step-by-step task that cannot be completed by an everyday consumer. By over complicating the process and by introducing literally hundreds of definitions, I have found many of my students completely turned off of the subject and generally disinterested.
