About the Author
Roger Pierangelo is an associate professor in the Department of Special Education and Literacy at Long Island University. He has been an administrator of special education programs and served for eighteen years as a permanent member of Committees on Special Education. He has over thirty years of experience in the public school system as a general education classroom teacher and school psychologist, and is a consultant to numerous private and public schools, PTAs, and SEPTA groups. Pierangelo has also been an evaluator for the New York State Office of Vocational and Rehabilitative Services and a director of a private clinic. He is a New York State licensed clinical psychologist, certified school psychologist, and a Board Certified Diplomate Fellow in Child and Adolescent Psychology and Forensic Psychology. Pierangelo is currently president of The National Association of Special Education Teachers, executive director of The American Academy of Special Education Professionals, and vice-president of The National Association of Parents with Children in Special Education.

Pierangelo earned his BS degree from St. John's University, his MS from Queens College, Professional Diploma from Queens College, PhD from Yeshiva University, and Diplomate Fellow in Child and Adolescent Psychology and Forensic Psychology from the International College of Professional Psychology. He is a member of the American Psychological Association, New York State Psychological Association, Nassau County Psychological Association, New York State Union of Teachers, and Phi Delta Kappa.

Pierangelo is the coauthor of numerous books, including The Big Book of Special Education Resources and The Step-by-Step Book Series for Special Educators.

George Giuliani is an assistant professor at Hofstra University's School of Education and Allied Health and Human Services, in the Department of Counseling, Research, Special Education, and Rehabilitation. He is the executive director of the National Association of Special Education Professionals, president of the National Association of Parents with Children in Special Education (NAPCSE), vice-president of the National Association of Special Education Teachers, and an educational consultant for various school districts. He has provided numerous workshops for parents and teachers on a variety of special education and psychological topics.

Giuliani earned Board Certification as a Diplomate Fellow in Child and Adolescent Psychology and Forensic Psychology from the International College of Professional Psychology. Giuliani is also a New York State licensed psychologist, certified school psychologist, and has an extensive private practice focusing on children with special needs. He is a member of the American Psychological Association, New York State Psychological Association, the National Association of School Psychologists, Suffolk County Psychological Association, Psi Chi, American Association of University Professors, and the Council for Exceptional Children. Giuliani earned his BA from the College of the Holy Cross, MS from St. John's University, JD from City University Law School, and PsyD from Rutgers University, The Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology.

Giuliani is the coauthor of numerous books, including The Big Book of Special Education Resources and The Step-by-Step Book Series for Special Educators.

Given the credentials of the authors, I expected that this book would have substance. Don't waste your time or money on this book as it is akin to an article in NASET which they publish, or any other article found in special education websites. While I appreciate succint books that become valuable reference, this book fails on the second point. The two 'new' tips I picked up on with this book would not need further 'go-to'.

About the Author

Katherine Perez, a professor of education at Saint Mary’s College of California, has over three decades of teaching experience from the preschool level through graduate school. A frequent presenter and enthusiastic “teacher cheerleader,” she offers guidance to both novice and experienced educators. Perez is an international educational consultant, author, and motivational speaker, specializing in instructional strategies and creative approaches to literacy and professional development. She integrates state-of-the-art methods and research with passion and practical insights from her own classroom experiences.

Perez has taught in many diverse environments, including in Richmond and Oakland, as a general educator, special educator, reading specialist, and curriculum and staff development coordinator. In order to “keep it real,” she balances her college courses and her work as a coordinator for the California Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment program by serving as a literacy coach in a San Francisco Bay Area middle school, engaging even the most reluctant learners with brain-friendly techniques.

Perez works with teachers, administrators and parents throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, the Caribbean, New Zealand, and Australia. For the past three years, she has conducted extensive training in Singapore and Hong Kong for the Ministry of Education.

About the Author

Sarah E. Boslaugh, Ph.D., M.P.H., has over 20 years of experience in statistical analysis, grant writing, and teaching; her employers and clients have included the New York City Public Schools, Montefiore Medical Center, Kennesaw State University, Washington University School of Medicine, and Saint Louis University. She served as editor-in-chief for the Encyclopedia of Epidemiology (SAGE, 2007), and has published three additional books: An Intermediate Guide to SPSS Programming: Using Syntax for Data Management (SAGE, 2004), Secondary Data Sources for Public Health: A Practical Guide (Cambridge University Press, 2007), and Statistics in a Nutshell (O’Reilly, 2nd ed., 2012).

Boslaugh received her Ph.D. in measurement and evaluation from the City University of New York Graduate Center and her M.P.H. from Saint Louis University. She is currently a technical writer and editor at Saint Louis University in Missouri. She specializes in data-based articles and explaining statistical principles to the general public. Her research interests include comparative health care delivery systems, quality of life measurement, and gender and sexuality issues in health care delivery. About the Author
Vincent R. Waldron is Professor of Communication Studies at Arizona State University, where he teaches courses on communication in work and personal relationships. Professor Waldron received his Ph.D. from Ohio State University in 1989. Dr. Waldron’s research explores how employees manage difficult workplace encounters, such as expressing intense emotion, exercising upward influence, and repairing damaged relationships. The author of two previous books on these subjects, Professor Waldron has published his work in such outlets as the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, Management Communication Quarterly, and Communication Yearbook. Vince Waldron has been recognized as a Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. He is chair-elect of the Interpersonal Communication Division of the National Communication Association. With his wife Kathleen and daughters Emily and Laura, Vince Waldron resides in Phoenix, Arizona.

Douglas L. Kelley (Ph.D., University of Arizona; M.C., Arizona State University; B.A., Westmont College) is Associate Professor of Communication Studies at Arizona State University’s West Campus where he studies and teaches about communication in personal and family relationships. Dr. Kelley has published his work in such outlets as Human Communication Research, Communication Studies, and Communication Yearbook. He has served as Chair of the Family Communication Division of the National Communication Association. Dr. Kelley (with his colleague Vince Waldron) received funding from the Templeton Foundation to support research on the role of forgiveness in long-term marriage.

I am enrolled in a Forgiveness and Reconciliation class at ASU (Arizona State University) that begins later this month (February), taught by Dr. Douglas Kelley. This book is our text for the class, and although I have not yet read "Communicating Forgiveness," I took a Family Communication class from Dr. Kelley last semester, so I am looking forward to intense learning and personal transformation.

About the Author
Professor Robert Bor trained in the UK, South Africa and the USA. He is a Chartered Clinical, Counselling and Health Psychologist as well as a Fellow of the British Psychological Society. He is a UKCP Registered Family Therapist, having completed his specialist training at the Tavistock Clinic, London and a clinical member of the Institute of Family Therapy, London. He has a special interest in developing psychological support services for those affected by chronic or acute medical conditions, and especially those with cancer. He has published more than 150 articles and chapters in peer-review publications as well as 20 books on the psychological impact of illness and serves on the editorial board of numerous international journals. He is also the Consulting Psychologist to several leading schools in London including St Pauls School, The Royal Ballet School and JFS. About the Author
Joel Cooper received his B.A. from the City College of New York in 1965 and a Ph.D. from Duke University in 1969. He joined the psychology department faculty at Princeton University in 1969, attaining the rank of full professor in 1978. Professor Cooper's major research focus is on attitudes and attitude change, particularly as they relate to the process of cognitive dissonance. His recent work examines vicarious experiences of dissonance (i.e., feeling dissonance due to the inconsistent behavior of others) and the role of the self in dissonance arousal. Two other areas of active interest are (1) the effect of expert testimony in courts of law, and (2) gender differences in the effectiveness of information technology, particularly among school children.

This book is a gem!

Fifty years ago, we learned that we cannot hold two conflicting thoughts at the same time, nor can we engage in behaviors that conflict with our beliefs, at least not without creating a great deal of psychological discomfort, which we then have to work hard to dissipate. Even before 1957, people knew, for example, that it was not easy to see themselves as upstanding, honest individuals while simultaneously swindling widows of their life savings. But that year was particularly full of conflicting thoughts and behaviors. It was the year Ed Sullivan introduced Elvis as "a real, decent fine boy" and then allowed his singing of "Peace In The Valley" to be televised only from the waist up. It was the year the Soviet Union launched not one but two Sputniks into orbit, putting that country and not us into first place in the original star wars.

But 1957 was a good year, too. The laser and the piña colada were invented. And social psychology was flourishing with interesting research that was relevant to everyday American life. It was the year psychologist Leon Festinger coined the term 'cognitive dissonance' when in another recent news event, a small group of Californians calling themselves The Seekers awaited the prophesied end of the world by flood on December 21, 1955. "All of the people would perish in the cataclysm," they believed, "except for those who believed in the prophecies emanating from the planet Clarion; they alone would be saved from the flood" (p. 3). As happened to the Millerites a century before, the Jehovah's Witnesses 40 years earlier, and countless other groups before and after, The Seekers were sorely disappointed when the day came and the expected event failed to transpire.

Festinger and his students, however, knew they had hit a gold mine of social research in this 'disconfirmed expectancy,' and their prompt and thorough study of the group resulted in Festinger's 1956 book When Prophecy Fails. In the book, Festinger finishes the story: After the great letdown, and after much prayer and soul searching by the devotees, the Seeker's prophet soon learned from Clarion that Earth had been spared because of the faith and efforts of the little group. What had seemed like a failed prophecy was actually a blessing in disguise. Goodbye, disconfirmed expectancy! Adios, cognitive dissonance! Festinger and his team went on in later studies to focus on the specific psychological process by which this cognitive adjustment had taken place. Cognitive dissonance theory had been born.

Social psychologist Joel Cooper captures all of this beautifully in Cognitive Dissonance: Fifty Years of a Classic Theory. It is a labor of love as much as a scholarly revisit to the roots, development, and current implications of an important 'super-theory' (p. 181) in psychology. Cooper is the ideal person to write this book. His own research in cognitive dissonance stretches back four decades, and, although he does not mention it in the book, Cooper's doctoral dissertation likely dealt with cognitive dissonance. His website reveals that even now "his major research focus is on attitudes and attitude change, particularly as they relate to the process of cognitive dissonance." In short, Cooper has the bona fides to write this book.

And this is no dry memoir. In the tradition of Elliot Aronson, whose own work in cognitive dissonance theory is amply discussed, the book is a delight to read. In discussing all of the important studies of cognitive dissonance over the last half century, Cooper takes care to delineate those studies that were particularly important in their purpose, particularly clever in their design, and most groundbreaking in their results. He made me nostalgic for that time when the field of psychology was alive with excitement and research topics that actually made sense to those outside a narrow specialty. While I personally wasn't even sentient during that longed-for time, it is fun to read about.

Cooper also writes of the theory's important implications for today. The early 21st century is alive with possibilities for conflicting thoughts and actions, as we drive across town to hear a speaker who flew his private jet to lecture us about environmental responsibility or we write a check for the campaign of a 'family values candidate' who is on his third marriage and is a known philanderer. Cooper agrees, and he discusses the role of cognitive dissonance theory in reaching current health-care and public health goals. And for clinicians, he provides a thought-provoking section on the union of psychotherapy (all brands) and cognitive dissonance.

This book is a gem and joins those rare others in our field that offer important historical perspective, brush away the cobwebs from relevant research, suggest remedies for some current challenges, and all the time provide a very enjoyable read.

Biased but still has good qualities

At times this book almost feels like a recitation of Coopers research career. Most of the research presented in this book was performed by or related to Coopers own research. Which makes sense, since he is more familiar with these experiments than experiments not related to his own. As such, the book mainly focuses on Coopers point of view of cognitive dissonance rather than cognitive dissonance in general.

If you aren't familiar with any of the research after 1957 then this book will do a pretty good job of getting you started, but I wouldn't recommend stopping there.

A fair summary of the theory

This book is quite useful on summarizing the development of cognitive dissonance theory over the years. It outlines the most important studies conducted in favour and against the theory and gives insight to other theories relevant to cognitive dissonance. Even though the book is far from being objective as the writer himself introduces his own perspective as "a new look at dissonance theory", the book still has the advantage of being one of the most comprehensive resource on the history of cognitive dissonance.

Comprehensive review but not for general audiences

In this book, Maggy Lee explores human trafficking as a multi-faceted crime whose contributing factors include global economics, global migration, and socio-economic class tensions to name a few. This book is highly comprehensive in this manner and provides an in depth overview of human trafficking and what is currently being done to prevent and prosecute the crimes as well as what actions still need to be taken. This being said, the book does seem to be written for a more academic audience that already has experience in working with anti-human trafficking efforts rather than for those who are looking to get base level understanding of the problem, This makes the book less accessible to the general populations and perhaps the addition of more detailed figures and graphs would ameliorate this issue.

Lee’s Trafficking and Global Crime is a sophisticated read tackling some of the most complex issues in human trafficking. She starts with a short introduction of trafficking and globalization, and then breaks the book down into 6 ways of thinking of human trafficking: as a form of modern slavery, as an exemplar of the globalization of crime, a synonym with prostitution, a problem of transnational organized crime, as a migration issue, and finally as a human rights dilemma. She analyzes all 6 ways of looking at human trafficking very well, however the book was very dry in some sections. I would recommend this book to someone which HT knowledge looking to expand his or her understanding of the complex issues around trafficking.

A comprehensive look at human trafficking

Lee effectively outlines the contested definitions of labor and sex trafficking human trafficking, efforts to combat it in contemporary society, and current transnational policies. The section headings clearly lay out conceptual approaches to each chapter’s idea and helps the readers understand the present situation of human trafficking and how it is rooted in historical context and norms. The author frames human trafficking as a social issue. For example, Chapter 2 highlights the presence of irregular migratory migrants spurred from economic crisis, ethnic persecution, and the social inequalities. These changes create incentives for people to move, and for people to organize an illegal migration industry. Additionally, Lee uses other frameworks including criminal justice, globalization, security, and human rights as well as empirical evidence from researchers and stakeholders in the field.
The book could have benefited from use of more detailed visuals or charts. For example, a map that outlines countries of destination labels countries as “low” to “very high” in reporting trafficking, but it could have provided more details of each region and more information about labor flows between countries that captures the “multiple dynamics between and within countries of origin, destination, and transit” as described by Lee.
Overall, this book is a critical analysis of all forms of human trafficking, and it encourages the reader to rethink human trafficking through a social approach versus organized criminality.
