About the Author
Jacqueline DeLaat is McCoy Professor of political science at Marietta College in Ohio and she also teaches online for the University of Maryland’s University College. In addition, she has lectured in China and Brazil, and in 2003 was selected for a Fulbright Teaching Award. Her educational background is in American politics and she holds a PhD from the University of Pittsburgh in public administration. For over twenty five years Dr. DeLaat has taught political science in small liberal arts institutions, with major teaching areas in public policy, public administration, American politics and institutions, and women in politics and the workplace. She is known as an enthusiastic teacher, favoring active student projects and a dynamic classroom―including the frequent use of current event projects, case studies, and simulations. Prior to her teaching career, Dr. DeLaat worked in the Washington, D.C. area, and held a variety of administrative post in government and in quasi-governmental organizations. Her Washington experience has enhanced both her subsequent teaching and research. She has also consulted with several colleges and universities, as well as private and governmental organizations, on gender issues. For the past decade, Dr. DeLaat’s professional agenda has focused on the development of a series of teaching cases designed to prepare students, and workers, for gender issues in the contemporary workplace. Originally centered in the United States, the work has recently broadened to include case studies set in workplaces in other countries, including Brazil, China and Germany. Her cases are frequently presented at international case study meetings, and have won awards including a special grant from the American Bar Association’s Commission on Justice and Education. Within the political science community, she has presented on the pedagogy and development of case studies. Additionally, she has also presented at several International Women’s Conferences, and in 2005 conducted an interactive workshop on gender in the workplace at the first Women’s Leadership Conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

About the Author
Gopal K Kanji, Emeritus Professor of Applied Statistics at Sheffield Hallam University, is also a founder editor of the two international journals namely, Journal of Applied Statistics and Total Quality Management. With a career spanning 37+ years in the field of statistics and quality teaching, publishing journals and books, writing technical papers and presenting research findings around the world, he is a true teacher, trainer, researcher and innovator and consultant.

More than 90 research papers and 15 books in Statistics and Total Quality Management have been published by him. He has been a very active member of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) and a promoter of ASQ in the UK. Recently, he was appointed as Vice Chair of the International Chapter of ASQ for Europe and the Middle East. He has presented papers at the Annual ASQ Congress. He is a fellow of the Institute of Statisticians, the Royal Statistical Society and member of the International Statistical Institute (ISI). He is Academian of the International Academy for Quality (IAQ). He has been teaching and consulting in different parts of the world, and as chairman, has helped to develop a European Master programme in Total Quality Management under the umbrella of EFQM. He has also supervised many PhD students in TQM and Applied Statistics.

Since 1995, he has organised World Congresses for Total Quality Management at Sheffield Hallam University, UK and other European countries. He has acted as a technical expert for the development of the European Customer Satisfaction Index. Recently he introduced a Business Excellence Model to measure stakeholders’ satisfaction within the organisations.

Enough Flaws to Prevnt me giving 5 Stars

I would have liked a more cookbook step by step approach working from the raw data (similiar to the excellent Experiment, Design and Statistics in Psychology by Colin Robson). Many of the examples start from already claculated statistics. However there are typesetting errors in some of the worked examples (see page 121 for example) - consequently we cannot take any of the calculations at face value)

I would have liked to have seen a better way of navigating through the test, how to select between similar test and how they are likely to give different results. The index is poor.

Finally I would guess that most people are wanted to use these test in Excel, so Publishing tables of P vales Is not the best way - I would have liked a section on how to duplicate these results using Excel.

Having said that however Its a Valuable reference - but requires thoughtfull review - the tests are not that accessible

EXACTLY what I needed

I had been working on my darn lit review for a few months, spinning my wheels and not knowing exactly what to write. This book takes you from the beginning and the title says it best "step-by-step". The first chapter talks about what is a lit review and many different examples of published lit reviews from dissertations. Then it goes into the types and you can figure out which lit review is best for you, or a combination of approaches. It tells you how to take good notes while you're studying so that you know exactly what to put in the review and as a bonus for me, it shows you how to incorporate EndNote in your search. Then it explains how to structure the review, the difference between critical reading and critical writing, etc etc etc. This author has found the perfect middle ground between sounding too simple and too complex. If I had this book months ago, my dissertation would probably be complete by now. I also bought Chris Hart's book "Doing a Literature Review" but this one is much better. Very easy to read but packed with extremely helpful information. Get this if you've never done a lit review before and need guidance.

Straightforward and practical

I read both Ridley's book and Chris Hart's book, "Doing a Literature Review: Releasing the Social Science Research Imagination." Ridley's book is very readable. It is basic and practical for students at the masters degree level but still valuable at the doctorate level. In contrast, Hart's book is more advanced and more theoretical. It is probably suited best for doctorate students. Some of the discussions in Ridley's book are obvious but nonetheless valuable when under the pressure of performing a literature review. Perhaps, one of the most valuable parts is the practical aspects suggested in this book to manage the process of doing a literature review such as controlling database searches, interconnecting ideas from multiple journal articles, and so forth. If you order both Ridley and Hart texts, and have not recently read another text about doing literature reviews, I suggest you start with Ridley. Doctorate students probably want to read Hart after Ridley. Masters students could probably get by with only Ridley.

My only criticism is that the author's writing style tends to be too wordy and sometimes is not as clear as it could be. However, neither of these are fatal.

Definitely does the trick

I am writing a doctoral dissertation in the fine arts, and I found this book exceedingly helpful. I wasn't sure initially from reviews of this books and similar books which to choose, but I think this one is the right choice. It's helpful for various levels of study, it's clear and "step" driven (rather than abstract), and it provides a ton of specific examples. I learned a LOT of new stuff reading it, and I came away with a much more rigorous lit review than before. Highly recommended.

About the Author
Robert Prigo, professor and director of the Teacher Education Program at Middlebury College, has worked for twenty years with K–12 educators on inquiry-based science teaching and learning, supported through grants from the NSF and the Vermont Department of Education. His work with teachers and schools goes beyond professional development workshops and institutes to include phone-call-help to local teachers, science assemblies at local schools, lending equipment and resources, and visiting school classrooms to work directly with teachers and students. Prigo was recognized in 1991 as "Vermont Professor of the Year" by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

About the Author
Dr. Kamal Fatehi is Professor of International Management and former Chair of Management and Entrepreneurship Department at Coles College of Business, Kennesaw State University. Before joining Kennesaw State University, he was Chair of Management and Marketing Department, and Interim Dean of College of Business Administration at Texas A&M International University. Previously, he was a professor of Strategic and International Management at Barton School of Business, Wichita State University, Wichita, Kansas.  He has taught at Louisiana State University, Western Illinois University, Eastern Illinois University, and Texas A&M International University. At Western Illinois University, he was recognized as an Outstanding Scholar. He was the recipient of Barton School of Business, Wichita State University Research Award.  In 1995, he was a Fulbright Senior Scholar at Western University in Baku, Azerbaijan and in 2004, he served as a Fulbright Senior Specialist and assisted the International Academy of Business, Almaty, Kazakhstan. In cooperation with his colleagues from Texas A&M University, he assisted Turkmen State University to establish the first business program in Turkmenistan. In teaching and research he draws from his years of managerial experience with industry and his service to public and private organizations as consultant, including an assignment with the Russian Privatization Center, Moscow, Russia. Dr. Fatehi has published in such journals as Journal of Business Research, Journal of Behavioral Economics, Journal of Management, Industrial Management, Employee Relations Law Journal, Managerial Planning, Management International Review, International Executive, International Journal of Management, and Journal of Global Business. One of the worst texts I have ever had to deal with

I am completing an accounting degree with a management minor. This means I have suffered through the Internal Revenue Code and various large textbooks with loads of technical information. That being said, Fatehi's textbook is one of the worst texts I have ever had to deal with. The chapters are 30 pages at least, the author cites so many other authors I wonder how much of the book he actually wrote, and the book repeats itself over and over. I have not been able to find an online student supplement from the publisher, which is common for many texts.

Overall, I would not recommend this text. It's a very frustrating read.

Strongly Recommend

This text was used in my MBA program, which Dr. Fatehi teaches at Kennesaw State University, and both the text and the course were extremely practical and useful. I am a mid to upper level manager with years of experience, but in the multi-cultural world of business today, I was amazed at how much I had to learn. I passed the text to my son, who is being transferred to a country once part of the Soviet Union, so that he can use it to learn how to better manage in a different culture. Excellent text. Strongly recommend.

About the Author
Carolyn Orange is Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Texas at San Antonio. She teaches Psychological Basis of Learning, Learning and Development of the School Age Child, Human Growth and Development, and Psychology of Human Motivation. She has a PhD and Master of Arts degree in Educational Psycho logy from Washington University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harris Stowe State College. She began her teaching career in the St. Louis Public Schools where she taught for a number of years. Her work as an educator has spanned about 25 years. That period includes some time that she worked for two corporations. She has worked as a researcher and educator in a variety of educational settings: elementary, secondary, English as a Second Language (ESL), Montessori, special education, adult education, art, and higher education. She has produced a video on self-regulation and has developed a Self-Regulation Inventory. She has published numerous articles in journals such as the Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, The Journal of Experimental Education, The Roeper Review, Journal of Communi­cations and Minority Issues, The Journal of Black Studies, The NASSP: Curriculum Report, and The High School Journal. In 2001, she was appointed to the review board of the Journal of Communications and Minority Issues. She is on the Board of Directors for the Girl Scout Council of San Antonio. She was included in Who’s Who in the World for 2005; Who’s Who Among American Teachers for 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, and 2003; Who’s Who in America 2001, 2002, and 2003/2004. Her current research interests are envirosocial factors that affect student achievement. I found this book to be shocking. It seemed like one nightmare after antoher. Most of the situations seemed to involve either physical or emotional abuse. Most teachers will not need to read this book. It might be useful for teachers that have been put on probation or some other sort of sanction. I hope that none of the teachers in this book are still teaching.

You mean I SHOULDN'T beat my students?!?

The "mistakes" Orange details border on criminal--sexual harassment, affairs with students, corporeal punishment. If you're looking for a book to keep you from getting fired or put behind bars, perhaps you might find this book useful. But if you're a non-deviant teacher looking to actually improve your teaching style and your rapport with students, look elsewhere.

A Review about The 25 Biggest Mistakes Teachers Make and How to Avoid Them

First off, I would like to start by making a comment on the overall society we live in. In many cases, teachers hands are tied when trying to discipline a student because of many psychological studies that tell us children are sensitive to humiliation and verbal abuse. Well Duh. Everybody is.

I have to say I have fairly mixed feelings towards this book, for two main reasons perhaps more. The first reason being is that many of the scenarios written in the book are completely outrageous and not to mention completely bias. It seems that all of these harrowing stories of teacher abuse are mainly meant to victimize the children telling the story. Victimization aside, I feel that many of these scenarios are borderline psychotic behavior, and there is no way a perfectly sane teacher would ever tape a child's mouth shut and cut off a bit of their hair to make them stop talking in class! (Scenario 1.13 pg 16)So I guess the point I am trying to make is this: I feel that many of her scenarios are not common ways in which normal teachers treat their pupils.

The second reason I have for writing this review is that I would like to mention that the other scenarios that don't borderline on psychotic behavior almost made me want to gag at what she said to do with the student. For example in Scenario 12.9 located on page 93 she gets her facts wrong and makes biased assumptions. Basically what happens is this girl has a series of traumatic events happen to her that are completely unrelated to school, and in order to keep her perfect attendance her MOTHER tells her she can't miss school, and whilst she is at school her teacher tries to console her. So at first I see nothing wrong with this, a bit of hard life for certain but what Orange says next is what I said before. She basically blames the teacher's strict attendance program that forces this poor little girl to go to school while her brother's in the hospital, when it clearly states it was her MOTHER who urged her to attend class that day and no where did it mention that this teacher was a hard hearted person and wouldn't allow a student to miss a couple days because of a family emergency. So the main thing I get out of this is that the teacher is always wrong even when they try to do right.

The third problem I have with this book is continuing on my last statement, all in the child's favor. Don't discipline them physically, you might hurt their little egos and damage them for life. Don't discipline them verbally you'll humiliate them in front of their classmates and hinder their emotional growth. Can't have that. The thing is I feel this teacher cares too much about her students' feelings to really prepare them for the world. If they never get disciplined, the real world is going to take them by surprise. I say this because if you never discipline a child if they are consistently bad then how will they learn to take responsibility for their actions?

So to put it all together there are some parts in the book that foster in me a desire to better myself as a teacher. But a lot of it seems modern day political correctness tripe or is completely off the wall as to be totally unhelpful.

I leave with this an excerpt from the book can be found on pg. 243 near the bottom of the page. "Teacher mistreatment of students can be unprovoked, but quite often it is precipitated by some action or infraction committed by the child. This is not to say that the child is at fault, because the action or infraction may only be the teacher's perception, masquerading as something real."

I am quite certain that when I see a child indulging in negative behavior I see it.

This book is insightful, but extremely boring. It is not written in a manner that engages the reader, and there are various grammatical errors littered throughout. I strongly urge you not to purchase this book. Buy something or Oran Young or Daniel Bodansky instead- they will keep you captivated.

About the Author
Joel M. Hektner is an Associate Professor in Human Development and Family Science at North Dakota State University. He holds a Ph.D. in Psychology: Human Development from the University of Chicago and an A.B. in psychology from Princeton University. Before arriving at NDSU, Hektner was a research scientist in child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Minnesota. He has used ESM to study  the developmental implications of longitudinal changes in adolescent experiences of flow and has written chapters on ESM in several books. In collaboration with students, he has conducted ESM studies of college students, adolescents in residential treatment, and LGB emerging adults. His research interests primarily involve family and peer factors that promote optimal development and evaluations of preventive interventions for antisocial behavior. He is presently working on strategies to strengthen positive peer culture among elementary and middle school children, and to promote more positive parent-child relations.

Jennifer Schmidt is Assistant Professor of Educational Psychology at Northern Illinois University. She earned her Ph.D. in Psychology: Human Development from the University of Chicago. Her current research focuses on resilience, motivation, and adolescent engagement in daily challenges. She has been conducting research involving the Experience Sampling Method (ESM) for over 10 years. Dr. Schmidt is former Director of Research at the Alfred P. Sloan Center on Parents, Children, and Work at the University of Chicago, where she directed an ESM study involving parents and children from 500 families across the United States. Her work to date has involved samples of children, adolescents, and adults. She has conducted ESM research within the context of families, elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools. Dr. Schmidt has trained national and international teams of researchers in ESM study design, administration and analysis.

Dr. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi is the Director of the Quality of Life Research Center at the Claremont Graduate School (CGU). His research interests include creativity and innovation, flow and motivation, leadership, work satisfaction, happiness, ethics in business and professions and school-to-work transitions. Dr. Csikszentmihalyi came to the Drucker School at CGU after spending over twenty years at the University of Chicago where he was a Professor of Human Development. He co-founded the "Positive Psychology" movement in The American Psychological Association.

Professor Csikszentmihalyi has written numerous articles and his books include the best-selling Flow, Being Adolescent, The Evolving Self, and Creativity. He is a member of the American Academy of Education, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the National Academy of Leisure Sciences.
