About the Author
Garth Sundem is an educational consultant and curriculum writer. A former language arts and music teacher, Mr. Sundem has published more than 15 books, primarily on the subjects of literacy and social studies. A graduate of Cornell University, he earned a Masters Degree in Music Theory and Composition. He presents at local and national education conferences and facilitates in-service trainings across the U.S.
A multicultural educator for many years, Jan Krieger has taught at bilingual schools throughout Central and South America, as well as in the United States. He is currently a Spanish teacher at both the middle and high school levels in Bozeman, Montana. His Masters Degree is in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Multicultural Education.
Kristi Pikiewicz is a middle school Social Studies and Language Arts teacher, author, and frequent presenter at local, state, and national conferences. Her first teaching position was at Hill Middle School in Novato, California where she was hired by the Bay Area School Reform Collaborative to work as a Title I Literacy Specialist in a highly ELL environment. She continues to value multiculturalism and hands-on learning in her classroom.

A Super Classroom Resource

This is a book that teachers and administrators in schools with ELL stufdents will treasure. It provides notes to parents, simple communication vocabulary and cultural information in 10 different languages - Spanish, Cantonese, Tagalog, Hmong, Haitian Creole, Russian, Korean, Arabic, Vietnamese and Navajo. This is a must for all school administrative offices as well as each teacher's classroom.

Great concept, shallow execution.

First, let me say how very excited I was to see this book. This book could have been a fantastic resource for teachers, administrators, and anyone else who works with families. Unfortunately, the book itself was disappointing. The pronunciation guides were difficult to follow and I doubt that I could produce anything near an intelligible Hmong greeting using this book as a guide. Including a cd with the book so that I could hear the phrases would make this a MUCH more useful book.
The introduction contains a brief section on cultural differences and some of the most common areas of misunderstanding in regards to intercultural communication. This was a sensitively written overview, and I was encouraged by it's presence. However, the idea that cultural communication is more than simply translating word is entirely disregarded in the model notes provided in each language section. The notes for each language are translations of exactly the same English notes, some of which I find a bit abrupt and tactless, even in English. Wouldn't it be more valuable to present samples of notes to families that are worded in ways that are sensitive to the cultural values and expectations of the varied cultures? I realize that is a lot to expect of teachers, but I don't think that it is too much to expect of a book that presents itself as "A Guide to Communicating With English Language Learners and Their Families."
I hope that this book is revised into the valuable resource that it could become.
