About the Author

Davd Knoke (Ph.D., University of Michigan 1972) coauthored Network Analysis (1982) and has published fifteen books and more than a hundred articles and book chapters, primarily on organizations, networks, politics, and social statistics. He was principal co-investigator on several National Science Foundation-funded projects on voluntary associations, lobbying organizations in national policy domains, and organizational surveys of diverse establishments. A current project on the Global Information Sector examines strategic alliance network evolution among international corporations. At Minnesota, he teaches a graduate network analysis seminar that attracts students from diverse disciplines.

Song Yang (Ph.D. University of Minnesota, 2002) is Professor at the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at the University of Arkansas. He also holds Qianren Professorship with School of Sociology and Political Science at Shanghai University. His research areas are social network analysis, sociology of work, and organizational studies. He published Social Network Analysis, Second Edition with David Knoke (Sage, 2008), and the Invisible Hands of Political Parties in Presidential Elections: Party Activists and Political Aggregation from 2004 to 2012 with Andrew Dowdle, Scott Limbocker, Patrick A. Stewart, and Karen Sebold (Palgrave MacMillan, 2013). He has published more than 20 articles in various peer reviewed journals such as Party Politics, Social Science Research, Sociological Spectrum, and Sociological Inquiry.

Great overview of SNA

A very good beginning text that presents an overview of social network analysis (SNA). It is an easy read that will allow one to understand the basics of SNA, including an overview of the mathematical elements. Also it has a nice reference list for the reader who desires a deeper understanding.

This is an approach I'm considering for my own research. I had no previous knowledge of this specific method, although I'm well versed in similar techniques. Overall, I thought this was well-written and not too overwhelming at this stage of my investigation. Most helpful.

About the Author
Andrew Pettigrew is Professor of Strategy and Organisation at the Saïd Business School and Senior Golding Fellow at Brasenose College, both at the University of Oxford. He is a leading expert on strategy and change in both the public and private sectors. He launched his career with a highly-regarded ten-year study of chemical company ICI, connecting economic business research with a broader sociological approach. He has revolutionised the study of organisational development by combining historical, political and social contextual information with statistical and quantitative data. Professor Pettigrew’s current research interests include the management of strategic change processes within organisations and the relationship between leadership, change and performance. Professor Pettigrew’s background in sociology and anthropology, where contextual and historical study are vital, informs his research methodology. Pettigrew believes that his work is to ‘catch reality in flight’ and to ‘give time to time’, encouraging researchers to emulate historians and ‘reconstruct past contexts, processes, and decisions’. Alongside his pure research, Pettigrew is concerned with practice and has been engaged internationally in consulting and advisory roles, from consulting on strategic change and management in the NHS to working with the boards of top corporations. He is Chairman of the Academic Sounding Board for McKinsey’s worldwide organisation practice. Pettigrew also studies the processes, practices and performance of collaborative academic research, addressing the ways business schools and researchers themselves deal with decision-making, innovation and strategic change management. He works with both the European Foundation for Management Development (EMFD) and the UK’s Economics and Social Research Council (ESRC) to understand and improve research in the social sciences and management. Pettigrew is author or co-author of 15 books and over 100 journal articles. He is recognised within the management community as one of the foremost researchers and practitioners in strategy and change management. In 2003 Pettigrew became only the third business school professor to be made a Fellow of the British Academy. He is a Fellow of both the British Academy of Management, and the US Academy of Management. He is also the only non-North American to be named a Distinguished Scholar of the US Academy of Management. He is the recipient of a Richard Whipp Lifetime Achievement Award by the British Academy of Management, and in 2009 he was awarded an OBE for services to higher education. Pettigrew has a degree in sociology at Liverpool University, and a PhD in industry sociology from Manchester Business School. Pettigrew lectured at Yale before returning to the UK, where he launched the Centre for Corporate Strategy and Change at Warwick University in 1985 and served as Dean of the University of Bath’s School of Management until he joined the Saïd Business School in 2008. Pettigrew has been awarded honorary doctorates from the University of Linkoping in Sweden (1989), University of Liverpool (2010) and Copenhagen Business School (2010).

Prof Howard Thomas has developed a global career in business and management education spanning almost 50 years.  He began his career as a Graduate Tutor and Assistant Lecturer in the London School of Economics in 1964.   His teaching and research interests include Business Policy and Strategic Management and he is a distinguished Professor of Strategic Management.

About the Author

Robert Ricken, EdD, served as Principal and Superintendent in the Mineola School District for twenty-two years and was interim Superintendent in the following districts: North Bellmore, Elmont, Bellmore, Smithtown Central School District and the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District. He has also been an interim Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent in the Half Hollow Hills Central School District. Presently, he teaches Educational Administration at Long Island University, C. W. Post.

Dr. Ricken has served as the Long Island Coordinator for the Anti-Defamation League's A World of Difference Institute and conducted anti-bias workshops in over 100 school districts. In addition, he has been the Chairman of the Board of the Nassau Citizens Budget Committee, Board Officer of School Business Partnerships of Long Island, Vice-President of the Nassau County Superintendents Association and President of Phi Delta Kappa, C. W .Post Chapter. Additionally, he served as an Impartial Hearing Officer and a member of the American Arbitration Association. In this capacity, he has conducted 3020A, Section 75, and special education hearings.

Other articles have been published in the New York Times, Newsday, Sports Illustrated, The Harvard Review, Harper's Weekly and Single Parent Magazine. He is a frequent contributor to many educational journals, and has written a column on education for a local newspaper, Economic Times of Long Island.

Dr. Ricken has presented many workshops, and has recently been the keynote speaker for the NASSP in New Orleans, the National Association of Middle Schools in West Virginia, Baltimore, Denver, Washington D.C. and Atlanta. He has also spoken at the National School Boards Association in San Francisco and Rochester, as well as for Phi Delta Kappa at Hofstra, C. W. Post, and Molloy College.

Awards include the Administrator of the Year by Phi Delta Kappa of Hofstra University, Administrator of the Year by Nassau-Suffolk Educator's Association, and recognition for his work in labor relations by the New York Council of Administrators and Supervisors. The National Public Relations Association honored him for his exemplary public relations practices. In 1992, he received the Outstanding Service Support Award from the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. In 1994, he was the recipient of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Recognition Award by Nassau County. In 2000, the New York State Middle School Association awarded him the Ross M. Burkhardt Award for his outstanding contribution to middle level education.

Michael Terc, MA, PD, served as an administrator in the Mineola Public School District. For sixteen years, he served as Assistant Principal at Mineola High School, New York. Before that, he taught mathematics at Mineola Middle School for sixteen years. He also served as principal of the Mineola Summer School Program for two years. During his career, he coached many sports and was involved in a host of student activities. He served as President of the Nassau County Baseball Coaches Association and in 1976 was selected as the Daily News’ High School Baseball Coach of the Year. In 1982, he authored "Coordinate Geometry and Art: A Match," published in National Council of Mathematics Teachers Journal. In 1994, he received the Jenkins Service Award, the highest service award given by the Mineola School District’s PTA Association. He received his MA in mathematics from Hofstra University, was awarded a Professional Diploma in educational administration from Long Island University, C. W. Post campus. He recently was selected by the School Administrators Association of New York State to receive its 1999-2000 New York State Distinguished Assistant Principal of the Year Award. His most recent publication was The Elementary School Principal’s Calendar: A Month-By-Month Planner for the School Year.

Great beginning guide for principals

With so many responsibilities, this is a nice reminder of things to do, some of which is easily forgotten or overun. This book provides many community, student, and staff communication building tasks and gives some details about how to go about them. While it is not the end all and be all list of duties, there are enough to help guide a principal to be successful in establishing a culture of trust and sharing.

I am not sure why the other review says the book is so expensive, but it was only $35 when I bought it new here on Amazon.

Excellent Resource Guide

This is truly an invaluable resource guide for principals. I would love for the authors to revise this book for new principals. In today's fast paced accountability driven culture, principals don't have time to create their monthly calendar to ensure they hit all of their targeted indicators. This resource provides principal with initial building blocks for a successful school year.

About the Author
Robert Weis is a licensed clinical psychologist and Associate Professor of psychology at Denison University, aselective liberal arts college near Columbus, Ohio. He earned a B.A. in psychology from the University of Chicago anda Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Northern Illinois University. He completed his predoctoral and postdoctoral workin clinical child and pediatric psychology at Columbus Children’s Hospital (Ohio) and Portage County Mental HealthCenter (Wisconsin). At Denison, he teaches courses in introductory psychology, research methods and statistics,abnormal psychology, and assessment and psychotherapy. He also supervises an undergraduate internship coursein applied psychology. His research interests are in psychometrics, children’s mental health program evaluation, andthe learning disabilities. His work has been published in Psychological Science, the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, the Journal of Abnormal Child and Adolescent Psychology, Psychological Assessment, and Psychology inthe Schools. When not working, Robert enjoys spending time with his wife and three children.

Good balance between research & practice

This book provides a nice introduction to abnormal child psychology. I especially like the way it integrates research with examples of real-world practice. The introductory chapters focus mostly on the principles of developmental psychopathology, ethics in research and practice with children, assessment, and diagnosis. Later chapters focus on specific disorders. Each chapter presents several "case studies" and shows how clinicians might use empirically supported treatments to help children with that specific disorder. Some of the things I liked about this book was that it has specific sections on adolescent substance use problems and pediatric bipolar disorder. I also liked the fact that it gives detailed descriptions of both psychosocial and pharmaceutical treatments and summaries of the research studies that support each treatment's use. Nothing is dumbed-down, but neither is it too difficult to understand. One weakness is a lack of emphasis on pediatric psychology. Still, a good book for undergraduates or beginning graduate students.

About the Author
Michael Bentley is an Associate Professor of Science Education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he teaches courses in environmental education and methods of teaching K-8 science. He has written science books for young readers as well as curriculum materials and numerous professional articles and chapters in books. He has also been involved with the creation of several innovative schools and has been an officer on two school boards. Bentley’s interests include teacher education, the public understanding of science, curriculum studies and international education, and the history, philosophy, and sociology of science as applied to science education.

Edward S. Ebert, II is Professor Emeritus of Education at Coker College in Hartsville, South Carolina and an award winning educator. With a degree in Psychological Foundations of Education, he has taught courses in educational psychology, elementary science methods, child development, classroom management, assessment, and creative problem solving. He as written a dozen books, including elementary science methods (Teaching Constructivist Science, K-8/Corwin Press), creative thinking and science teaching, introduction to education, classroom pragmatics: management and assessment (The Educator's Field Guide/Corwin Press), and an examination of public education in the American culture. Ebert has given numerous presentations nationally and internationally, and has taught science education and educational psychology for a semester at Shanghai International Studies University, Shanghai, P.R. China.  He now resides in Wellfleet, MA, where he continues to publish educational materials and serves on a regional school board.

Christine Ebert is Associate Provost, Dean of the Graduate School, and Professor of Science Education at the University of South Carolina. Her work in science education focuses on conceptual change and development in students' understanding of science principles. In addition she has taught courses in thinking and reasoning, and is extensively involved with collaboration between elementary schools and the university. Ebert serves regularly as a program evaluator for national federally funded science initiatives. She has co-authored three other books related to science education and conceptual development. Ebert has presented her work on science education and creative thinking at conferences across the country and around the world.

Poor at best

I dislike writing a review which rates someone's work as poor - but this book just misses the mark on numerous levels, it gives constructivism a poor image. For those to whom constructivism is a challenge, or new, this book isn't much help. For old hands, there is very little new. The author seems to miss a number of opportunities to move his beliefs forward ... Lot's of words, precious little effect. I remember early on in the book a half page of writing titled something like "What is science?" ... The author spends any number of sentences describing what scientists do ... but never answers his own question. I read it three times, for I was so shocked by the utter dislocation of text to title. Here was a great chance to make the case that constructivism is science in action ... There wasn't even a definition of terms ... What does the word science, mean? How does that translation mesh with what constructivism in the field, can mean? It's downhill from there ... For those who find or have found value in the book Bravo ... this one went back the next day, for my part.

Teaching Constructivist Science K-8

This book is easy to read and follow. I have found this book to be energizing and helpful. I am always trying to hook my students into learning and this book offers sound, research-based premises, ideas and activities that connect with curriculum standards. With all the emphasis on reading and math in schools today, students begin to believe that all the other subjects do not matter. The authors offer teachers ways to promote the idea that science is indeed interesting, even if students think it does not matter.

Dr Wendy Jolliffe is Head of Scarborough School of Education at the University of Hull and has strategic responsibility for Teacher Education.  Wendy is a former deputy headteacher who has worked in Initial Teacher Training (ITT) for 10 years.  She worked as a Regional Adviser for ITT for the National Strategies from 2008 to 2010.

Basic Overview

This was a great book for someone who needs to learn about cooperative learning for the first time. It breaks everything down and gives you a basic overview of the why's and how's of implementing. As a teacher who already had the basics I was disappointed in the book because I was hoping for some new adaptations and felt it was low on actual examples and strategies to do with my students.
