Of immense help - Thank you!
By John Michael Donohue
Dr. Simon Western's book was of immense help to me in two areas. First, in my own PhD studies, the book provided added insights into Critical Management Studies (CMS); and second, in my college teaching, the book added a higher level of insight beyond the basic sophomoric presentations of leadership offered in basic college texts. The presumption in virtually all undergraduate texts is that the student-reader isn't capable of higher level leadership or management thinking. Thankfully, Prof. Western did not fall into this premise, and therefore my students benefited greatly from the higher thinking provided in the text.

Review
`The author is a practicing counsellor, principal social worker and director of Brief Therapy Group, Dublin. His book, clearly drawn from his own experiences, is highly readable and instantly accessible.... This slim, tautly written volume disgusies an enormous, practial treasure store to help group facilitators. At a time when many mediation services are considering - or have started - diversifying and are offering group work for children, parents or those going through divorce and separation, Solution-Focused Groupwork should be essential reading' - Family Mediation in Practice

`In this comprehensive and well-targeted book, John Sharry manages to cover the key points relating to working with groups in a solution-focused way in an easy and relaxed style. John Sharry's experience shines through, with many examples and case studies illustrating the ideas.... The book is well referenced and indexed, and structured to allow easy navigation for the reader. John Sharry has produced a book which will interest not only group therapists, but also anyone interested in helping groups stay on track towards solutions' - The Solutions Focus

'The author has created interesting and thought-provoking arguments that provide a balanced analysis of abuse therapy, in particular Repression, Dissociation and False Memory Retrieval' - Clare Young, The Journal of Critical Psychology, Counselling and Psychotherapy

Solution-Focused Groupwork
By Karen Mace
This book is a must have for anyone working with groups -whether from a counselling perspective or not. It is easy to read, gives excellent case examples and a clear definition of what 'solution-focused' is. Any group needs to be driven by goals and not problems and this book shows you how to do this. I would recommend it for any one working with groups.

An excellent technique-driven manual
By Pamela J. Notti
John Sharry lays this book out in a thorough, technique-driven, and comprehensive manner. The book has actual scripts for applying this therapy style. It's an easy read, informative, and his passion for solution-focused brief therapy shines through, in this well written book. I'm a graduate student of social work and used this book to further research Solution-Focused brief therapy and upon reading this book I anticipate using this theory in my future career. As a student that has not worked in the field I was not confused after reading this book, I felt empowered. In addition to this, the book is not too long, it's informative, yet, succinct. Although, the author is from Britain and some of the words differ in spelling from American English, I did not view this as a problem.

Review
"Great for parents, people entering the field of audiology, teaching the deaf, or anyone unfamiliar with hearing loss." (Roberta Agar-Jacobsen, Teacher of the Deaf 2006-08-30)

"The way the many complexities of speech are discussed, explained, and addressed is very reader-friendly, easy to understand, and accessible." (Sherilyn Renner, Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing 2006-08-31)

"Real-world examples that reinforce teachings accompany analytical and framework viewpoints, making this a valuable library reference and text recommended for student teaching classrooms and college-level educator's libraries alike." (The Bookwatch, September 2007 2007-10-12)

“Designed to enlighten educators, parents, and professionals serving children with hearing loss. However, the novice is likely to gain immense insight from this text because of its readability and excellent descriptions of language acquisition in a range of situations. The techniques explained are supported by research, and the authors have done a good job of highlighting appropriate interventions to help students succeed.” (PsycCRITIQUES, January 2008, Vol. 53(4) 2008-02-15)

Real-world examples reinforcing teachings accompany analytical and framework viewpoints
By Midwest Book Review
Susan R. Easterbrooks and Ellen L. Estes' HELPING DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING STUDENTS TO USE SPOKEN LANGUAGE focuses on young children who are learning spoken language and NOT sign language: this focus lends particular value to educators working with both hard of hearing and everyday students in classroom settings, with chapters providing models based on how infants and children learn spoken language. Real-world examples reinforcing teachings accompany analytical and framework viewpoints and conclude with chapter summaries, making this a valuable library reference and text recommended for student teaching classrooms and college-level educator's libraries alike.

The Politics of Belonging: Intersectional Contestations (Sage Studies in International Sociology), by Nira Yuval-Davis

In this groundbreaking book, Nira Yuval-Davis provides a cutting-edge investigation of the challenging debates around belonging and the politics of belonging. Alongside the hegemonic forms of citizenship and nationalism which have tended to dominate our recent political and social history, the author examines alternative contemporary political projects of belonging constructed around the notions of religion, cosmopolitanism, and the feminist 'ethics of care'. The book also explores the effects of globalization, mass migration, the rise of both fundamentalist and human rights movements on such politics of belonging, as well as some of its racialized and gendered dimensions. A special space is given to the various feminist political movements that have been engaged as part of or in resistance to the political projects of belonging.

Review
This is an in-depth examination of a slippery and contradictory subject. Knowledge alone is not enough for this type of project. It takes breaking out of narrow conceptual cages and unsettling what we think of as stable meanings. The author brings all of this to life in often unforgettable ways. (Saskia Sassen)

National identities were once taken largely for granted in social science. Now they are part of an even more complex "politics of belonging" that challenges both public affairs and the categories of social science. Nira Yuval-Davis offers a nuanced account that will be important for scholars and all those concerned with contemporary politics. (Craig Calhoun)

Nira Yuval-Davis always pushes the feminist envelope. Here she guides us through the thickets of five questions that preoccupy all of us today , shining a bright light on the fraught dynamics of "belonging." One of the innovations of The Politics of Belonging is to introduce us to specific feminist groups and movements tackling each one of these five thorny questions. I've learnt a lot, as I always do when guided by Nira Yuval-Davis. (Cynthia Enloe)

Nira Yuval-Davis has written an important book on the politics of belonging. As a result of her anti-racist, socialist version of feminist political commitment she has always approached the issues of gender and gender relations intersectionally; this stands as a key feature of her work overall and of this particular book... Yuval- Davis thus provides a mapping of the ‘politics of belonging’ applied to different environments and she does it with exquisite sophistication and attention to detail by including a wide range of theories and authors.

(Montserrat Guibernau, Queen Mary, University of London)

This book is a major contribution to debates about how we can understand the intersections between multiple forms of identification and belonging which structure social relations. It argues that analyses and political projects which privilege particular axes of identity are always incomplete and limiting and thus always make for inadequate social science and dangerous politics... Yuval-Davis’ scholarship is always concerned with understanding the social world in order to change it – in a more meaningful way than that captured by the now ubiquitous term ‘impact’.

(Ben Gidley, University of Oxford)

The book provides the reader with a dense theoretical description and exhaustive examples, which cover a range of disciplines such as Political Science, Sociology, Philosophy, Gender Studies and Cultural Studies. Furthermore, it not only gathers multiple aspects for a critical analysis of the slippery and complex manifestations and dynamics of belonging in contemporary political projects, but it is also a valid tool for fostering awareness and mobilization strategies, especially for feminist movements. (Giulia D’Odorico)

This is a timely and important book which addresses key contemporary issues around thethemes of belonging and the politics of belonging... The Politics of Belonging is an ambitious and pertinent book which sets out to equipsociologists, political scientists and others with the tools to analyse complex contemporarydebates in this field. Applied in specific contexts, this book is another potential classic, andmay well emerge as the definitive text on the politics of belonging. (Naaz Rashid)

Yuval-Davis draws the contents skillfully together with the help of theoretical frame... The literary contribution is valuable to understanding contemporary political projects of belonging, and how the boundaries of belonging are constructed with different naturalized signifiers. Besides ample examples from grassroots movements to supranational projects, also numerous footnotes provide the reader [with] easily accessible online references... Yuval-Davis's literal contribution is more than topical as it explores the slippery and complex phenomenon of belonging as well as its manifestations and dynamics in contemporary political projects. (Mari Toivanen)

In this book, the author outlines a specific approach to the infinite number of inherent difficulties in tackling the major categories of social division in modern societies, along with their normative significance... The sense of balance and differentiation is a constant throughout the analysis in this book and it is this, along with the general strength of argumentation, which gives the concluding arguments their weight. The capacities of individual and collective actors to negotiate the increasingly dynamic, complex and involved processes of changing attachment, value and meaning are at the core of Yuval-Davis’s perspective upon the contemporary politics of belonging.

(Kieran O’Connor)

Review
'I must say that I give this book, "two thumbs up". The real genius, however, is the editorial choices that David Mayle has made. This is not meant to denigrate the work of the authors but to emphasize the essential role played by the editor of a compilation. These are the right articles, from the right sources, at the right time, and in the right sequence. This compilation is top-rate, and my expectation is that this will become another strong link in the chain of change management literature'

a great help
By latin literature lectora
As a high school teacher who wants to try to keep up with her students' technological prowess, I got this book to help me plan a DST project. This book gave me the confidence to try one. I'm glad I bought it and have used it a LOT.

What this book did well: explain and give examples of what digital stories and story maps are, show and explain the steps in the process, and insist on copyright respect. Look at the Contents page; Ohler delivers what he promises.

I only wish Ohler had included calendars or timelines of other teachers' projects, because mine took longer than I expected. I take full responsibility for that, and actually expected mistakes on my part since I am a beginner, but I can't help but think I would have planned better had I had a model.

Incidently, my students were not as technologically savvy as I expected, and not saving the project correctly (with Microsoft Movie Maker) (some skipped the publishing step, for various reasons) was the most common mistake in that area. I recommend you have them turn in their project 3 or 4 days before the screening day so you can catch and have students fix those errors without wasting class time.

For other beginners: be sure the dialog/narration is included in the story board they turn in. My students groaned when I asked for the dialog to be written because they had already outlined the plot to me orally and through a map, but I caught numerous mistakes (insufficient or illogical plot development) thanks to the story board step.

Good luck. This book will really help.

Great guide to digital storytelling
By Elizabeth
For someone who has developed a love for storytelling over the years, Jason Ohler's Digital Storytelling in the Classroom takes it up to a new level. The book is divided into three main parts. It begins by going over what makes a great story, pointing out that when creating a digital story you have to start with a good story - otherwise you are only using technology to amplify something of poor quality. He talks about how, while creativity is a necessity, digital storytelling is a way for the "artistically challenged" to still create stories. The author then moves forward to discuss how to map the story and creating a visual portrayal of a story (VPS) or what we might know as a chart graphing the rising action, climax, and falling action of a story from beginning to end. He also looks at types of stories and other ways to prepare students for creating a digital story. Finally, Ohler goes over how to create the digital story using technology, including all of the parts that need to go together in the creation (sound, visual, video, green screen, etc).

Throughout the book Ohler is supportive and encouraging of the first-time practitioner of digital storytelling, and discusses how it can be used in the classroom without wasting class time and while still covering the material. A large amount of the book (2/3rds actually) is devoted to how to create a story, with only 1/3 specifically looking at how to implement it using technology. At the beginning of the book Ohler notes the materials (computers, cameras, video cameras, etc) that would be needed to implement the techniques that he suggests and they look reasonably priced as well as things that could likely be borrowed. Overall the book is very well done, however it does not go into specific details on how to use the equipment needed to create a digital story. I suppose that since there are many different types of computer programs it would be difficult to go into too much detail, however I would have appreciated more information in this area. Overall I would give the book four out of five stars. I look forward to using this in my classroom in the future.

Great book for anybody new to storytelling projects
By Sarah Holler
I checked this book out from the library because I wanted to know more about how to start planning a digital storytelling project for elementary aged students. This was so helpful that I knew I wouldn't be able to live without it and ended up purchasing my own copy!

There are a lot of things I really appreciated about this book, but especially Ohler's emphasis on the importance of crafting a good story before starting the digital part of the project. I hadn't thought to have students storyboard their projects before starting, much less create a story map before even beginning writing. This book also gives a simple breakdown of storytelling techniques and elements for teachers new to storytelling projects, which was incredibly helpful for me.

Ohler reviews and introduces several widely available (and often free) digital programs for storytelling, and even has suggestions for teachers in technology poor classrooms. For someone like me, who has no idea where to start, this was great, practical advice.

Finally, the chapter on copyright and fair use offered some helpful tips and information about what can be a really gray area for teachers and students alike. His three rules of respect, citation, permission and compensation, are a good guideline for how to deal with information and images found online, and how to make it clear to students the importance of fair use.

Overall, this book is great. I would recommend it to any teacher, librarian, or parent interested in learning more about new media and literacy.

It is essential reading for all who seek to provide the very best of learning opportunities for young children by bring parents, professionals and informed pedagogy together in a thoughtful and informed partnership of learning. Extending Thought is a major building block for many of us who study young children's capacity to think and learn' - Dr Cathy Nutbrown, Reader in Education, University of Sheffield

Review
'The authors have written a guide for practitioners that is both highly practical, and yet based upon sound theoretical principles….This book achieves a successful, yet often elusive, link between theory, research and practice, and deserves to have a high readership. I will have no hesitation in recommending it to a range of readers' - Jane Mott, Support for Learning

'This book fulfils its aim to explain working memory and the limits it places on children's classroom learning. For teachers it gives a very clear guide and fills a gap in understanding that can only lead to more child-centred approaches to teaching and learning' - Lynn Ambler, Support for Learning

Working Memory Is Very Helpful for Parents, too!
By Virginia M. Buchanan
This book is easy to read, and it covers a topic "Working Memory" in far greater detail than other articles and references that are generally available in the US. I am pleased to see this topic being discussed, as my child has impaired working memory. We are struggling to determine the best methods possible to help her learn. I would recommend this book to all teachers and to parents who have a child with impaired working memory.

Excellent Guide for All Educators
By J. K. Stoppleworth
In a time when research shows that learning and social language skills increase when children with special needs are included in the regular education classrooms, practical tools seem to be scarce for educators to develop strategies that serve the learning needs of all in their classroom. The largest group of children on IEP's present with working memory deficits; however, your classrooms also include many children that have not formally been identified with learning disabilities who also have working memory weakness. Working Memory and Learning: A Practical Guide for Teachers is a wonderful tool for all educators to educate and arm themselves with strategies that help you modify the same curriculum across all populations in your classroom. If you are a parent of a child who is struggling or failing in the regular classroom, read this book to gain insight and empower yourself in ways to help your child learn more efficiently in the classroom environment.

Don't Forget the Importance of Working Memory
By Lawrence E. Miller
This is a great handbook on short-term memory and working memory problems for classroom teachers and parents. Gathercole & Alloway are authorities in the field and have produced a lot of scholarly work for those who want to delve more deeply. Cf.Working Memory and Neurodevelopmental Disorders

Another good book that can appeal to professionals and laymen alike isThe Overflowing Brain: Information Overload and the Limits of Working Memory by Torkel Klingberg, a scholar in the field.
