a great help
By latin literature lectora
As a high school teacher who wants to try to keep up with her students' technological prowess, I got this book to help me plan a DST project. This book gave me the confidence to try one. I'm glad I bought it and have used it a LOT.

What this book did well: explain and give examples of what digital stories and story maps are, show and explain the steps in the process, and insist on copyright respect. Look at the Contents page; Ohler delivers what he promises.

I only wish Ohler had included calendars or timelines of other teachers' projects, because mine took longer than I expected. I take full responsibility for that, and actually expected mistakes on my part since I am a beginner, but I can't help but think I would have planned better had I had a model.

Incidently, my students were not as technologically savvy as I expected, and not saving the project correctly (with Microsoft Movie Maker) (some skipped the publishing step, for various reasons) was the most common mistake in that area. I recommend you have them turn in their project 3 or 4 days before the screening day so you can catch and have students fix those errors without wasting class time.

For other beginners: be sure the dialog/narration is included in the story board they turn in. My students groaned when I asked for the dialog to be written because they had already outlined the plot to me orally and through a map, but I caught numerous mistakes (insufficient or illogical plot development) thanks to the story board step.

Good luck. This book will really help.

Great guide to digital storytelling
By Elizabeth
For someone who has developed a love for storytelling over the years, Jason Ohler's Digital Storytelling in the Classroom takes it up to a new level. The book is divided into three main parts. It begins by going over what makes a great story, pointing out that when creating a digital story you have to start with a good story - otherwise you are only using technology to amplify something of poor quality. He talks about how, while creativity is a necessity, digital storytelling is a way for the "artistically challenged" to still create stories. The author then moves forward to discuss how to map the story and creating a visual portrayal of a story (VPS) or what we might know as a chart graphing the rising action, climax, and falling action of a story from beginning to end. He also looks at types of stories and other ways to prepare students for creating a digital story. Finally, Ohler goes over how to create the digital story using technology, including all of the parts that need to go together in the creation (sound, visual, video, green screen, etc).

Throughout the book Ohler is supportive and encouraging of the first-time practitioner of digital storytelling, and discusses how it can be used in the classroom without wasting class time and while still covering the material. A large amount of the book (2/3rds actually) is devoted to how to create a story, with only 1/3 specifically looking at how to implement it using technology. At the beginning of the book Ohler notes the materials (computers, cameras, video cameras, etc) that would be needed to implement the techniques that he suggests and they look reasonably priced as well as things that could likely be borrowed. Overall the book is very well done, however it does not go into specific details on how to use the equipment needed to create a digital story. I suppose that since there are many different types of computer programs it would be difficult to go into too much detail, however I would have appreciated more information in this area. Overall I would give the book four out of five stars. I look forward to using this in my classroom in the future.

Great book for anybody new to storytelling projects
By Sarah Holler
I checked this book out from the library because I wanted to know more about how to start planning a digital storytelling project for elementary aged students. This was so helpful that I knew I wouldn't be able to live without it and ended up purchasing my own copy!

There are a lot of things I really appreciated about this book, but especially Ohler's emphasis on the importance of crafting a good story before starting the digital part of the project. I hadn't thought to have students storyboard their projects before starting, much less create a story map before even beginning writing. This book also gives a simple breakdown of storytelling techniques and elements for teachers new to storytelling projects, which was incredibly helpful for me.

Ohler reviews and introduces several widely available (and often free) digital programs for storytelling, and even has suggestions for teachers in technology poor classrooms. For someone like me, who has no idea where to start, this was great, practical advice.

Finally, the chapter on copyright and fair use offered some helpful tips and information about what can be a really gray area for teachers and students alike. His three rules of respect, citation, permission and compensation, are a good guideline for how to deal with information and images found online, and how to make it clear to students the importance of fair use.

Overall, this book is great. I would recommend it to any teacher, librarian, or parent interested in learning more about new media and literacy.
