Eric M. About the Author
Michael J. Worth is professor of Nonprofit Management in the Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration at The George Washington University in Washington, DC. He teaches graduate courses related to the governance and management of nonprofit institutions and organizations and philanthropic fundraising. Dr. Worth served as vice president for Development and Alumni Affairs at The George Washington University for eighteen years, where he planned and directed two major campaigns and provided support to the Board of Trustees for board development programs. In addition, Dr. Worth has served as director of Development at the University of Maryland College Park, as a member of the Commission on Philanthropy of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), and as editor of the CASE International Journal of Educational Advancement, a peer-reviewed scholarly journal focused on the practice of institutional advancement in educational institutions.

Great for beginners

I bought this book by a recommendation from a friend. This book is gives you the basis of all that is entailed to start a nonprofit organization. It also gives you great resources to get more information from. From an operational plan to leadership, this book covers it all.
Unlike some nonprofit books, instead of the author telling the reader which is the right and wrong way to do certain things, like with a strategic plan, he gives you a variety of choices and lets the reader decides what is best for them.
He does not really go in depth in a lot of subjects, but he gives great advice and makes up for it in the other books that he recommends.
It's a great book for those who don't know anything about starting a nonprofit.

Small font a poor decision; otherwise a good textbook

I teach NPM in a university program and find this to be one of the better textbooks currently on the market. I'm planning on testing it with upper level undergrads this fall and abandoning the Ott I've used for years. However, I expect my students will find the small font as annoying as I do, so not sure I'll renew. If so, will have to go to Smith/Bucklin or some other outdated book, alas. With the demand for current NPM textbooks so strong (meaning, those that have kept up with legal changes and management research), I wish the editors had not cut corners by shrinking font size to cram in more text. After all, the goal is to get students to actually READ the text.

However, each chapter had a summary and a list of key terms which I found useful.

Overall, I would say that this book is well written for a student or anyone who wants to learn more about the nonprofit sector.

About the Author

Gilbert Guerin, PhD, is on the staff of the San Jose State University Foundation where he directs teacher preparation and demonstration projects. Previously he held the position of professor of special education and department chair at San Jose State University. He has also held faculty positions in the schools of Education at the University of California at Berkeley, in Educationaly Psychology at California State University, Hayward and in Psychology at Dominican College, San Rafael, California. He was a school psychologist for more than 10 years and holds teaching credentials in elementary education, secondary education, and special education. He is the author of Informal Assessment in Education; Improving Instruction for Youth at Risk; and Critical Steps in Curriculum Reform and coauthored Bridges to Reading. He is the coauthor of recent articles titled "Confronting the Problem of Poor Literacy: Recognition and Action," "Plans, Predictions, and Frustrations in the Education of a Troubled Youth: Michael's Story-One of Many," and "Dropout Prevention: a Case for Enhanced Early Literacy Efforts." He is a mentor and trainer with the Monarch Project, University of Illinois at Chicago, and has provided similar services for the Alliance Project at Vanderbilt University. He has developed an online instructional resource site for high school teachers of students who are at-risk for school failure (found at http://alternativeed.sjsu.edu). He actively supports parent participation in the instructional decisions for children and youth and collaborates with Parent Helping Parents, a family resource center.



Mary Male, PhD, is a professor of special education at San Jose State University, where she has taught for twenty-two years. She coordinates a federally funded Alternative Education Teacher Preparation Program. Previously, she was a general education classroom teacher in Grades 4, 5, and 6, and a junior high school resource specialist in special education. She has also been a program administrator and staff development consultant for the California Department of Education. She has helped school districts nationwide plan for inclusive classrooms and is an expert in using technology to create access to the general education curriculum. She is the author of Technology for Inclusion: Meeting the Special Needs of All Students (2003). Recent book chapters include "Computers and Cooperative Learning in Diverse Classrooms" in Cooperative Learning and Strategies for Inclusion by Joanne Putnam (1998) and "Tools for Reconceptualizing the Inclusive Classroom" in New Ways of Lookiing at Learning Disabilities edited by Lou Denti and Patricia Tefft-Cousin (2001). She has presented at conferences nationwide on strategic planning for comprehensive systems of personnel development, cooperative learning, technology and inclusion, and alternative education. She is an Apple Distinguished Educator. She is the parent of a student with disabilities. She is active in her community by serving as a Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) and is a mentor for students in the foster care system who have a dream of a higher education.

I had to get this book for a graduate-level special education class. It is an easy read - almost too simplistic for someone with a career in the field. I would recommend this for parents and others interested in learning more about effective strategies for working with their children.

About the Author

Eleanor Renée Rodriguez, PhD, a professional developer with Rodriguez and Associates, has provided consulting services and training to school districts, national associations, and state departments in 48 of 50 states and abroad. Her concentration is on research-based teaching and leadership strategies. Great title that falls short of delivery...

The book is rooted on the cognitive development theories of Feuerstein. The theory is sound. The practical applications of these principles in a 'real' classroom seem daunting. There are sample lesson plans printed in the book (although most of them are geared toward the middle school aged child and not the high school level). The authors do a fine job of reviewing reading scaffolds (ie. word maps, graphic organizers, KWL charts, etc). However, in my opinion, they rely too heavily on cooperative grouping for the lessons that are proposed in the text.

Not Just for the Urban Educator!

I don't know why the authors limited this to an urban audience. The problems are the same in under-served rural areas as well. All of the issues discussed are pertinent here as well. This is a very well written book with lots of meaningful insights into children from generational poverty situations. I especially liked the information on Feuerstein's Instrumental Enrichment program, which would benefit every student. The book contains detailed, RELEVANT lesson plans that make the informational text come alive. If you are looking for a worthwhile educational book, this is the one.

About the Author
Since earning her MEd from the University of Florida in 2000, Karen Donohue has worked to develop and implement a writing curriculum for elementary students. She has experience with Early Intervention programs with students in first-, third- and fourth-grade classrooms in both Reddick Collier Elementary in Reddick, Florida and Pine Forest Elementary in Marietta, Georgia. With student writing becoming a benchmark for students as young as first grade, Karen has researched, developed, and taught Staff Development courses for K-5 teachers. Her workshops titled "Writing to a Prompt (Grades K-5)," "Write Way to Success (Grade 3-5)," and "Writer's Workshop - Getting Started" have been implemented schoolwide at Pine Forest Elementary where she was a Grade 1 Team Leader. She is currently a Grade 1 Team Leader at Lockheed Elementary in Marietta, Georgia, where she is a member of the International Reading Association.

Great for upper elementary

I bought this book at the recommendation of my district's curriculum director. I teach 7th grade and felt that many of the lessons were too basic for my students. If I taught 5th or 6th grade, I would highly recommend this book.

The templates for students were boring and bland

The templates for students were boring and bland, the charts weren't great either. Some of the rubrics could be helpful. Overall, this book did not meet my needs as a K-8 writing tutor. I didn't find much I could incorporate into my lessons that I didn't already know. Might be useful for a classroom teacher, but I have seen better resources out there.

This would be great for home use

I bought this to use in my classroom along with other materials. This would be great if we had more time, all of the lessons would take up the whole period. Many of the tips are great, but many don't mold well with other systems.
