About the Author
Denise Nessel is an associate of the National Urban Alliance for Effective Education (NUA), where she focuses on teaching reading and writing as thinking processes in grades K-12. She has worked as a secondary English teacher, elementary reading specialist, reading clinician, university professor, district-level curriculum supervisor, co-director of a statewide staff development project, curriculum manager at educational software companies, and consultant to schools around the country and abroad. Nessel has conducted numerous workshops and demonstration lessons for teachers and administrators and has served as a consultant and writer for educational publishers and multimedia firms. She has written several books and classroom resources for teachers and a number of articles for professional journals.

Joyce M. Graham, Ph.D. is the Director of Professional Development for Scholastic RED, the professional development division of Scholastic, Inc. In this capacity, Joyce is responsible for recruiting and training consultants as well as developing and managing institutes and workshops. Before joining Scholastic, Joyce had her own educational consultant firm and worked with school districts across the country. She was a classroom teacher for over 15 years and brings her classroom experience to her work with teachers. Joyce has co-authored several books for classroom teachers. She has also served as editor for several books focusing on professional development.

About the Author

Robert DiGiulio is Education Professor at Johnson State College in Vermont. He earned his Ph.D. in human development from the University of Connecticut, and recently earned his D.Ed. in socio-education from the University of South Africa. He began his teaching career in the New York City public school system, where he taught for a number of years. His 33-year career as an educator includes teaching at the elementary, middle, junior high and college levels, with experience ranging from crowded urban schools to a one-room schoolhouse. He has also served as a school principal educational researcher, consultant, and writer.

As an educational consultant, he co-developed Teen Test, a vocational counseling program for adolescents. He coauthored educational computer software called Language Activities Courseware and authored its teachers guide. His Teacher magazine article The Guaranteed Behavior Improvement Plan was recognized as having one of the highest total readership scores of any of that magazines articles.

He has authored numerous books including When You Are a Single Parent, Effective Parenting, Beyond Widowhood, and After Loss, selected by Readers Digest as their featured condensed book in May 1994. He is a contributing author to The Oxford Companion to Womens Writing in the United States, and Marriage and Family in a Changing Society, and is the coauthor of Straight Talk about Death and Dying.

Most recently, he has written Nonviolent Interventions in Secondary Schools: Administrative Perspectives, a chapter in Peacebuilding for Adolescents: Strategies for Educators and Community Leaders, edited by Ian H. Harris and Linda R. Forcey. Dr. DiGiulio's most recent books are Great Teaching: What Matters Most in Helping Students Succeed, Educate, Medicate, or Litigate? What Teachers, Parents, and Administrators Must Do About Student Behavior, and Positive Classroom Management: A Step-by-Step Guide to Successfully Running the Show Without Destroying Student Dignity, both published by Corwin Press.

Dr. DiGiulio's interests include international education, child behavior, and teacher education. He won a 2002-2003 Fulbright Scholar Award to the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland. He was a Delegate to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) 2003 Conference on Teaching and Learning for Intercultural Understanding. Dr. DiGiulio is also a member of the Vermont Society for the Study of Education, and serves on the Project Harmonys Advisory Board on Education Programs. He resides with his family in northern Vermont.

PCM is a MUST Read for All Educators

This book is a great read for all prospective teachers, as well as educators currently in the field. It focuses on implementing several forms of management, including: assertive discipline and disciplining with dignity. The 3 axioms for student success (relatable to Vygotsky's ZPD) are crucial to building a positive classroom. Management techniques are focused on the student, and all suggestions are a direct result of the Constructivist theory. I would highly recommend this book!

It is a very practical book, and it helped me greatly during my second year of teaching. The checklists were easy to use, and very complete. I recommend Dr. DiGiulio's book to any teacher, new or experienced.

Fabulous!

Payne does a fabulous job explaining Narrative Therapy. I especially like that right off the bat, in chapter one, he gives an overview of Narrative Therapy from start to finish, wrapping up with ending therapy, all in 17 pages! That gave me the needed visual picture of the process. He goes on to explain narrative therapy in an understandable, and thorough format, quoting Micheal White often. I highly recommend this book as an introduction to narrative therapy for the helping professionals.

A lovely book

To my mind this is one of the very best books on narrative therapy available today. Payne’s work is philosophically coherent, grounded in practice, clearly written, and easy to follow. For all of these reasons, I often recommend this book to students and practitioners interested in learning more about this approach. But as a practitioner myself, hungry for new ideas and challenges, I found Payne’s work interesting in another respect. One often finds that narrative therapy books focus on summarizing the thought and practice of Michael White and David Epston (narrative therapy’s primary architects). And in some ways, this is what Payne seems to set out to do. However, what I enjoyed most about this book is that it is his voice, rather than that of White or Epston, that comes through (something which White himself appreciated about the book). Payne engages thoughtfully, intelligently, and sometimes critically with accepted narrative thought and practice. Something in his style of writing makes one think of this approach not as a fixed set of tools, but as a practice to be engaged with, related to, thought about, and questioned. Payne helps readers to understand certain foundational principles of narrative therapy, but at the same time invites us to ask questions, to stretch our thinking, to probe a little further. I don't know if this was his intention, but I feel he has done us a service by adding something to – and not merely reproducing the accepted story of - this young, enormously exciting, and growing field of thought and practice. I think it’s a great book.

About the Author

Thomas J. Sergiovanni is Lillian Radford Professor of Education at Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas, where he teaches in the school leadership program and in the five-year teacher education program. Sergiovanni received his master’s degree from Teachers College, Columbia University, his Doctor of Education degree from the University of Rochester, and honorary degrees from the University of San Diego and State University of New York. Prior to joining the faculty at Trinity, he was on the faculty of education administration at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, for 19 years, and he chaired the department for seven years. A former associate editor of Educational Administration Quarterly, Sergiovanni serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Personnel Evaluation in Education and Catholic Education: A Journal of Inquiry and Practice. Among his recent books are Moral Leadership (1992), Building Community in Schools (1994), Leadership for the Schoolhouse (1996), The Lifeworld of Leadership: Creating Culture, Community, and Personal Meaning in Our Schools (2000), Supervision: A Redefinition (2002), and Strengthening the Heartbeat: Leading and Learning Together in Schools (2005).
