Kenneth J. Gergen is a Senior Research Professor at Swarthmore College, USA, and President of the Taos Institute. He has been the recipient of many awards throughout the world. His major works include Realities and Relationships: Soundings in Social Construction; The Saturated Self: Dilemmas of Identity in Contemporary Life; and Relational Being: Beyond Self and Community.

An Inspiring Introduction to Social Constructionism

Kenneth Gergen's new book, An Invitation to Social Construction (Sage 1999), may be the best introduction to the scholarship on social constructionism available today -- but, that's not all it is. It is also an inspiring and optimistic vision of what we can do to create better lives for ourselves.
To present this vision, Gergen performs the service of a personable tourguide, cutting a path through the jungle of philosophy while making suggestions for action along the way. For example, instead of merely presenting George Lakoff's theory of everyday metaphor, he points to the way Lakoff has shown us that discussions are modeled on war (p.65). Why not, Gergen suggests, find "alternative metaphors"? Why conduct conversation as war? And Gergen does not just present Derrida's deconstructionism. Instead, he says, "Let us put this argument into action" (p.27). Deconstructionism, he explains shows that any direct statement of truth disguises a mountain of ambiguity and uncertainty. So, rather than fear that uncertainty, he tells us, why not embrace it as part of our lives? It need not cripple us, because, as Wittgenstein says, we do not need metaphysical clarity to go on together. Even with our uncertainty we can cut bold and exciting paths to better lives. It is just that our new paths need to be provisional. We will need to be ready to revise them in collaboration with others -- but that is the pleasure.
I would summarize Gergen's general philosophy like this: Beware of authors who would sell you a model of any truth. Any model that presents itself as the simple truth will be deconstructed early tomorrow. However, don't let that discourage you from bold and audacious theorizing. It is the theorizing itself, the excitement, the adventure, the inspiration, the dialogue that will bond us together and create our good future, not the specific content of any particular theory.
Then, in the spirit of his own suggestions, Gergen constructs just such an audacious theory, a theory full of specific yet provisional answers.
First, he suggests, we need to quiet the battles in our personal warzones. To do that we must deconstruct our ideology of individualism. This classical American ideology has us thinking that each person is an island to herself deserving individual credit and individual blame. Individualism undercuts the impulse for dialogue. It shortcircuits the conversational melding and shifting of our individual minds. Individualism makes us forget, against all odds, that every human action is also re-action, and that every reaction is also action. Individualism confines us forever in the tragic culture of mutual blame. Let us replace it then, he advises, with a fresh vision of a collaborative world.
Next, he suggests we stop staring out the back window of our culture with our eyes on the past. I am convinced by Gergen's argument that Foucault was such an author. He was trapped by his eternal resistance to past traditions (p.40), left without sufficient vision to nourish ideas for how to go on. We cannot wipe out these traditons. Our vision for the future must be pieced from the cloth of the past.
In practical terms, as Gergen puts it, this means we should learn to replace individual monologs with transformative dialogues. These are conversations that help us locate "ourselves within each other" (p.160), help us grow comfortable with a continuous revision of our evolving positions (p.162). We should turn to transformative dialogues because it is here that we will find ways to promote the flowering of the not yet said.
I am simply enchanted by all of this, by the dream of a collaborative creation of dialogic culture, a culture in which the unsaid finds ways to be spoken, a culture in which new answers emerge in generative and audacious theorizing showing us paths we have not yet seen and inspiring us with the spirit of doing what has not been done. This is what Gergen's book does for me.

I've spent the last 30 years practicing and teaching psychotherapy. In that time I've read everyone from Jay Haley and Steve de Shazer to Otto Kernberg and Heinz Kohut and lots of people in between in search of helpful ideas. I came across Kenneth Gergen's writings several years ago and now I can't stop reading the guy. This book is the best introduction to social constructionism and Gergen himself I have read to date. I only wish it had been his first so I could have had this clear, broad ranging work as a starting point for reading his earlier, somewhat more challenging writings. Careful though, one book and you can get addicted.

"Expanding the scope of their previous works, The SAGE Handbook of Political Advertising (2006) and Political Advertising in Western Democracies (1994), Kaid (telecommunications, Univ. of Florida) and Holtz-Bacha (chair, political communication division, International Communication Assn.) have assembled contributions from dozens of academics from around the globe for this timely two-volume text exploring, in nearly 600 entries, the intersection of politics and media. Although it is international in scope, the encyclopedia's primary focus is the United States and, to a lesser extent, Europe. Each volume opens with an A-to-Z list of entries, followed by a listing of entries arranged by subject, closely mirroring the relevant listings found in the Library of Congress Subject Headings. Lucid and unbiased, the entries offer biographies of notable leaders (e.g., Zhelyu Zhelev of Bulgaria) and scholars and examine numerous theories, groups and organizations, key events, media outlets (e.g., the blogosphere), legal instruments, government institutions, and influential books and films critical to understanding of this complex, interdisciplinary field. While a comprehensive examination of every relevant topic in this discipline would be impossible in just two volumes, the editors come close to delivering just that. BOTTOM LINE This work is considerably more comprehensive (by about 700 pages) than CQ Press's single-volume Encyclopedia of Media and Politics. Such a wide-ranging exploration comes at double the cost of its competitor, however. Recommended for academic libraries."

About the Author
Lynda Lee Kaid (Ph.D., M.S., B.A., Southern Illinois University) is Professor of Telecommunications and Senior Associate Dean of the College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida. She previously served as the Director of the Political Communication Center and supervised the Political Commercial Archive at the University of Oklahoma. Her research specialties include political advertising and news coverage of political events. A Fulbright Scholar, she has also done work on political television in several Western European countries. She is the author/editor of 14 books, including the Handbook of Political Communication Research, Videostyle in Presidential Campaigns, The Electronic Election, New Perspectives on Political Advertising, Mediated Politics in Two Cultures, Political Advertising in Western Democracies (SAGE, 1995), and Political Campaign Communication: A Bibliography and Guide to the Literature. She has received over $1 million in external grant funds for her research efforts, including support from the U. S. Department of Commerce, the U.S. Department of Education, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the National Science Foundation. She is a former chair of the Political Communication Divisions of ICA and NCA and has also served in leadership roles the American Political Science Association and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

Christina Holtz-Bacha (Ph.D.) is the current chair of ICA’s Political Communication Division. In addition to her position at the University of Mainz (where she has taught since 1995), she has held positions at the University of Munich, the University of Bochum, the University of Minnesota―Minneapolis, and was a Fellow at the Shorenstein Center/John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 1999. She is co-editor of the German journal Publizistik and sits on the editorial boards of Journal of Communication, Journal of Political Marketing; and European Journal of Communication.She is co-editor with Lynda Lee Kaid of Political Advertising in Western Democracies (SAGE, 1995).

Interests

Current research spans both of the School’s programmes and includes work with colleagues in Dundee and Bristol on developing an intervention for weight loss part partum and understanding the reasons for suboptimal uptake of folic acid. A personal programme of work is concerned with the sociology of recovery and involves research into young adult cancer patients’ concerns about future fertility (with colleagues from Aberdeen), reintegration after stroke, and the long-term outcomes for women who have experienced post partum psychosis (with colleagues at St.Andrews).

Her research career has covered a wide variety of topics located at the intersection of the clinical and the social - e.g. HIV/AIDS; reproductive health and fertility; psychosocial health; and obesity. Rose’s theoretical interests centre around the links between identity and agency, and implications for health promotion and clinical practice. Rose has a particular interest in rigour in qualitative research and has published widely on this topic in a range of academic journals. Reflecting her conviction that qualitative research is a craft skill, Rose has developed an innovative series of ‘hands-on’ qualitative methods workshops. She has been invited to present these workshops throughout the UK, in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Switzerland, France, the US and Canada. She co-edited Developing Focus Group Research: Politics, Theory and Practice (Sage, 1999). Her most recent books - Introducing Qualitative Research: A Student Guide to the Craft of Doing Qualitative Research (Sage, 2014) and Doing Focus Groups (Sage, 2008) - bring together and share the expertise she has developed through running workshops for a variety of audiences over the past 15 years.

This is a great book on the topic, from a diverse set of authors. Some of the chapters are more academic and dense than others, but the book in general is highly readable and relatively quick and concise. I'd recommend the book to anyone who is curious why sometimes corporations and/or their employees do things you wish they didn't.

About the Author
Dianne Miller Nielsen has been an early childhood educator for more than 30 years. She currently owns an early childhood teacher training agency, Nielsen Training Services, Inc. This agency provides workshops, seminars, and courses for early childhood teachers and child care center directors, including training for the nationally recognized Child Development Associate (CDA) credential. She is currently designated as a Master Trainer in the Texas Early Care and Education Trainer Registry. Dianne is also an active member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, having contributed to the journal Young Children, and continuing to serve as a validator for program accreditation. She recently completed her second term of office as Vice-President of the San Antonio chapter of NAEYC. Dianne speaks and keynotes at many national, state and local conferences, and currently provides consultation services for a number of early childhood programs.

Great book for the beginning teacher. Used it to help develop curriculum for Special Ed preschool class. Comprehensive--covering wide range of information to use with this age-group, and user-friendly.

This has been a very helpful book for developing and setting up my classroom and curriculum. It is a very easy read and breaks down several aspects of the classroom giving you ideas and food for thought.

This is a beautifully laid out book. It provides information about setting up pre-school classes with practical suggestions and tips. There are many pictures to illustration points, and the text is very readable.
